It is often said that to accurately gauge the overall depth and strength of a sports club, you have to look at the club’s second team or reserves; if this is the case, Wimborne Rugby Club is in rude health!

Whilst the 1st team continue to top their league, the club’s 2nd string is making its own headlines, sitting proudly atop ‘Counties 2 Tribute Ale Dorset and Wilts South’. Barry Maidment’s men remain unbeaten after 4 league games, averaging over a half a century of points per match.

Frome IIs were the visitors to Leigh Park on Saturday and simply could not match the home side’s intensity, structure and above all, pace, succumbing eventually to an 88-19 defeat.

Speedsters Woody van der Feltz and Jacob Squire led the rout with 4 tries apiece with Phil Papworth and Will Courage successfully converting 13 of the 14 tries.

Whilst the backs took the vast majority of the scoring plaudits (with all but one of the tries), the foundations were very much set up front including commanding displays from newcomers James Newsam and Simon Challiner as well as the ever-reliable Jack Cook. Recent Wimborne Academy Graduate, Will Gray, put in a Player of the Match performance with a wonderfully influential display on both sides of the ball.

Next week, the mouthwatering prospect of ‘first versus second’ will see Wimborne travel to Bridport, with the Badgers hopeful of maintaining their perfect start to this campaign. Bridport too are riding high having put 70 points on North Dorset IIs last time out, so this will be a monumental battle between the league’s two form sides.
