Wimborne return from Stratfod-upon-Avon with a losing bonus point
Tries: Max Tipping, Max Hewson
Conversions: Max Tipping(2)
Penalties: Max Tipping(2)
Wimborne travelled back to Stratford upon Avon on Saturday following the abandonment of the original fixture back in November due to a serious injury to one of the home team players. Much to the distress of all present, it was Wimborne who were to suffer a similarl injury of their own on this occasion when second row Tom Starr suffered a broken leg once again in the early stages of the match. Following some very swift response from the local medics Tom was taken to Warwick hospital and hopefully will be on the road to recovery as soon as possible.
When the match was eventually to resume on a damp and grey day, Wimborne put on a heartening performance but only to reflect what could have been if they had been able to convert a number of promising attacks in to scores as on more than one occasion the final execution was lacking.
With probably the most settled team selection all season and following the impressive victory over Oxford Harlequins the previous week, Wimborne had to make only three changes with Oxford based Jordy Brown coming in on the wing and Mark Hopkins coming in to the back row for his first senior team appearance for some considerable time and Ben Hunt returning as hooker.
With the disruption of the injury Wimborne trailed by 3 point to 8 with a Max Tipping penalty goal to show for their efforts in the first half.
Gradually Stratford increased their lead as the match developed and Wimborne found themselves adrift by 25 points to 6 going into the final phases of the game with only a second penalty goal from Tipping adding to their score.
But as has been the case on more than one occasion during the season Wimborne came on strong in the last quarter of the match leaving them to rue the earlier lack of accuracy. Two tries were scored, the first by Tipping and then seventeen years old Max Hewson, a late call up to the bench, was on hand to go over on his senior debut. Tipping’s trusty boot added the extras to both scores to bring up a final score line 0f 20-25 with at least the consolation on a difficult day of a losing bonus point.
Wimborne are on the road again this week with a trip to Wiltshire rivals Royal Wootton Bassett.
