Away win for Wimborne at North Dorset
Plus another try bonus point
Tries: Moysey (2),Hunt, Carter, Foley
Conversions: Bartlett(3) Penalties: Bartlett (1)
Wimborne travelled to Slaughtergate on Saturday and following a thoroughly impressive performance came away with their first win at North Dorset since January 2010.
Five changes were made from the winning fifteen against Blandford. Tyler Adams starting in the front row and Ed Carter returning to the back row to replace Paul Watson who had sustained a nasty ankle injury at training during the week. In the backs Doug Robertson came in to the centre with Jordan Brown and Will Wright starting on the wings.
Once again as with the previous week against Blandford the victory was built on well organised defence throughout, but particularly in the first twenty minutes of the match when North Dorset dominated possession but were unable to pierce the Wimborne defensive lines.
Wimborne gradually began to establish a foothold in the match and were rewarded with the first points on the board when after probing drives from Tom Starr and then Ed Carter, Tom Moysey was on hand to go over in the corner. This rocked North Dorset somewhat and Wimborne grabbed the opportunity to extend their lead when having worked their way down to the home side’s line, were awarded a penalty and Ben Hunt came from deep to crash over. This sent Wimborne into the break with an improbable 10-0 advantage.
The second half was pretty much all Wimborne. The first score after the break was always going to be crucial and when it came Wimborne’s way fifteen minutes in, it looked like it would settle things. Pushing the ball deep into North Dorset territory and defending in that area of the pitch had approved a very effective tactic the previous week and again it proved successful. The vice like defence of Robertson and Hamer forced a penalty and from a quickly moved ball the omni present Ed Carter was on hand to force his way over. Joe Bartlett entrusted with the place kicking duties this week was able to add the extras.
Momentarily North Dorset got themselves back into the match when from a scrum in close they bundled over the line. This only spurred Wimborne back into action and shortly afterwards they secured the try bonus point when defence was turned into attack and from a quickly recycled turnover Tom Moysey evaded the last line of defence to score under the post and Bartlett converted.
Not content to rest on their laurels at this point Wimborne again drove deep into North Dorset territory and after forcing a five metre scrum the impressive skipper Declan Foley was able to execute a text book pick up from the base of the scrum to score. Bartlett again obliged with the conversion and for good measure also added a further three points with a penalty late in the game.
A thoroughly well earned victory for Wimborne with telling contributions coming in from right across the eighteen man squad and from which they will hope to build going forward into the season starting with the Dorset & Wilts Cup match visit from Sherborne this coming Saturday.
