WOOTTON BASSETT 38 - 7 WIMBORNE
WIMBORNE WELL BEATEN AT LEAGUE LEADERS
Wimborne travelled to Royal Wootton Bassett on Saturday and returned empty handed after being well beaten by the team that now currently comfortably tops the Southern Counties League.
Wimborne were forced to make a late change resulting in veteran scrum half Jason Llewellyn being asked to make the long journey to north Wiltshire late on resulting in Ollie Bourton debuting for the season having to shift to the full back position.
Wimborne then made the worst possible start when captain Paul Watson took an early blow and was forced to leave the field in the third minute.
With the lion’s share of possession a clinical RWB side were able to score two tries in the first quarter of the match and before Wimborne were able to pose any sort of threat approaching the half hour mark.
After forcing a penalty but with the resultant shot ay goal going wide Wimborne regained possession immediately from the drop out and an astute kick ahead by Llewellyn saw hooker Sean Barker in an advanced position and winning the race to the touch down with the home team’s full back. Paul Roberts converted and suddenly Wimborne, albeit momentarily in the game.
Maintaining the 7-14 score line to half time was Wimborne’s aim at this point but unfortunately they allowed RWB to breach their defence and go over in the corner in the final minute to reach the interval with a comfortable 21 to 7 lead.
In truth Wimborne never really threatened the RWB line in the second half and gradually the home team pulled away when the laudable efforts in defending began to take their toll resulted in three further tries to cement a conclusive victory
