U15 D&W Cup Match Report

Reigning champs prove too strong

We had won our first six matches this season, which included a win in our first D&W cup pool match against Marlborough, but knew that this game would be a threat to that winning streak. Reigning champs Salisbury have a strong squad, even with the DPP restrictions, and they started much the brighter with early pressure and continuity forcing an overlap and an opening try within 3 minutes of the kick off. Our boys were a little shell shocked and struggled to get a grip on the pace the visitors were playing at, who crossed again on 10 minutes, this time under the posts to extend their lead. Salisbury were very good at the breakdown, getting men there early to force the turnover. We managed to put together some effective driving phases, but couldn't get the ball down the backs to convert into points. Salisbury exerted a period of pressure and crossed in the corner on 20 minutes, after some powerful rucking. We finished the half very well though, the boys crossing the line twice only to be held up. Unfortunately we couldn't get the score before half time and we were 0-17 down.

We started the second half where we left the first, putting together some decent phases and gaining territory and threatening the visitors line. The last pass went awry a few times, but eventually from a 5m scrum, Alex picked and drove over to open our account. We couldn't add to our score and Salisbury scored two good tries by getting the ball wide with some excellent off loading. We finished strongly and nearly scored in the corner, but the cover tackling was excellent and kept us out.

The boys had tackled well all game, but just lost out too often at the breakdown turning over ball and making mistakes. Salisbury took their chances well and ran out deserved winners. It was a hard fought game, but the ref was very complimentary about the excellent discipline from both sides. Onwards now to several friendlies before our next cup outing at North Dorset before Christmas.
