Not a good day for Wimborne

Tries: Adams, Mason, Cook, King
Conversion: Maidment

Wimborne travelled to Salisbury on Saturday for what is in effect their local derby in South West One and came away chastened from being on the wrong end of a nine try mauling at the hands of their Wiltshire based opponents.
Both sides started with a positive intent and after Wimborne had missed an early chance from a penalty kick at goal it was Salisbury who secured the first score in the seventh minute and after some poor tackling added a second try in the sixteenth minute. Both were converted to ease Salisbury into a 14-0 lead.
It was not all Salisbury at this stage and twice after strong runs down the right wing Lewis Mitchell was bundled into touch just short of the line and a second penalty kick at goal landed fractionally short.
After all this Wimborne effort it was the home team who extended their lead from a kick ahead resulting in the Salisbury attacker winning the race to just outstrip the covering Wimborne defence .
Wimborne came back with some purpose though and Tyler Adams drove over from close quarters to get his team on the scoreboard.
Back came Salisbury and with five minutes remaining in the half they scored what was probably the try of the match to extend their lead to 28-5
Things got worse for Wimborne just on half time when skipper Dec Foley took a hard knock and had to be replaced by debutant Jack Cook for the remainder of the match.
Wimborne got off to the worst possible start to the second half when Salisbury went over for their fifth converted try inside three minutes of the re start.
Thereafter it was very much a case of try for try and whilst some disappointing defending at times allowed the rampant Salisbury side in for four more tries all immaculately converted, Wimborne did play some enterprising rugby of their own and manage three scores of to at least secure the consolation of a bonus point on the day Jack Mason and Steve King both showed impressive strength to score individual tries and Jack Cook was on hand to take a short pass from Ryan Maidment close in to score on his debut.
Wimborne went into this match with only five of the team who played in the opening match of the season although despite this will be well aware that at the higher level failing to compete in all areas of the game will be punished.
All in all a very disappointing result for Wimborne who will be anxious to recapture their early season form with the visit of Swindon to Leigh Park next Saturday.
