Wimborne brought the curtain down on their triumphant 2016/7 campaign with fast and often frenetic victory at Blandford on Saturday.
This was the return fixture from the very opening match of the season back in September and whilst Blandford displayed themselves to be a much improved team over the course of the season Wimborne had too much fire power in their speedy back line. That said Wimborne too were a much changed side as a result of the cumulative effect of a number of injuries to key players in the final weeks of the season. For this match Mitch Stainer and Tom Lofts were both brought in to make their senior debuts and Michael Pride and Pete Mills were also drafted in to boost the depleted forward pack.
It was Blandford that started the better and found themselves in an early lead after Wimborne were penalised and having set up an attacking position in the visitors twenty two drove over in the corner for an unconverted try.
This spurred Wimborne in to action and they were quickly back on terms when Tom Moysey broke from well in his own half to evade a number of tackles and send Keelan Stringer over in the corner. Moysey converted to edge Wimborne ahead. They added to this very soon after when Ashton Kerley fielded a clearance kick swivelled away from the Blandford kick chasers linked with Joe Bartlett who in turn had Moysey on hand to take the try scoring pass.
Wimborne were rampant now and with their forwards setting up a solid platform they added two further tries in the second quarter of the match. Firstly a long miss pass on the half way allowed Jim Brokenshire to round his opposite number and then after Kerley came in off his wing to make ground up the centre of the pitch it was Bartlett who was on hand to take the final and decisive pass.
Nevertheless Blandford came back and after a couple of errors allowed them to gain a decent field position their forwards again fashioned a second try which was converted right on the half time break to reduce the Wimborne advantage 26-12 .
Wimborne brought on all their replacements at the beginning of the second half and any lingering doubts of a home team fight back were quashed within the opening few minutes when again spinning the ball wide breached the Blandford defence with Jordy Brown fresh to the fray scoring from the right wing.
In the hot sunshine and very firm pitch conditions the game broke up even further as the second half progressed with the sides exchanging scores on two occasions Wimborne’s tries coming from Paul Watson popping up out on the left flank and then a second run in from Moysey. In between Blandford earned themselves a penalty try followed by a further drive in to the corner which brought up their own bonus point score.
Finally with players on both sided beginning to wilt in the conditions Bartlett took a scoring pass from Mitch Stainer who did well to take a crash ball on the angle to punch a hole in the defence. This was converted to bring up the final 50-24 score line and to bring the highly successful season to a close.
