Dorset & Wilts U15 Plate Winners
Cracking game to end the season in style
U15 Report Dorset & Wilts Plate Final
v Minety RFC
24 April 2016
A beautiful, sunny day at Leigh Park set the scene for the culmination of our D&W campaign this year. We welcomed Minety for the first time and not having played them before it was an opportunity to forge new friendships and share experiences. There was a a slight northerly breeze blowing across the pitch, but it wasn't going to favour either side. From the off Minety looked strong in the tackle and were quick to get hands on the ball and contest the breakdown. They moved the ball well through their excellent centre pairing, found some space and their left winger rounded the defence to score in the corner after just two minutes. The conversion was missed, but the boys had been given their wake up call. The next fifteen minutes ebbed and flowed, but the Wimborne pack were starting to exert some dominance and place the opposition defence under pressure. This led to a series of forward surges towards the line ending up with skipper Alex driving over from close range under the posts. A great reward for the build up play. Jake converted to give us the lead. The game had shifted slightly in our favour and we were getting more of the ball and finding ourselves in good situations. With five minutes to go before the break, we had an attacking scrum from which Alex picked, drew the cover and fed Jake who in turn isolated the winger and fed Elliot to outpace the defence and score in the corner. The conversion from the touchline sailed over and we headed into halftime with a healthy lead.
There were several enforced changes at half time, but its been a squad effort all year to get us here so nothing to worry about. Minety however, had other ideas and came out all guns blazing in the second half, scoring two well worked tries in just eight minutes to get back into the lead 14-19. Would this rattle the boys in black? Not likely, just five minutes later the boys worked the ball down the field and eventually from an attacking scrum, with a couple of well worked forward drives, Barnaby smashed through the defence to score. Jake added the extras and we were back in front, but the next fifteen minutes took what seemed like an eternity. Minety threatened the line on several occasions, and in particular one last ditch tackle from Rob D. kept them out, but the boys held on to the end of a pulsating match and finished the game back in the opposition 22.
An absolute cracker of a game, which could have gone either way, filled with endeavour, skill and courage. Both teams having the guts and maturity to never say die and keep fighting to the end. Well played all.
