Match Report U16 Dorset & Wilts Cup
Nervous start ends with emphatic victory.
Pool Match 1
v North Dorset RFC Won 41-19
Wimborne opened their cup campaign with a hard fought win against tough opposition. North Dorset started the better and led at half time, but Wimborne's superior fitness and pace in the sunshine eventually told as they ran in five unanswered tries in the second half. It was obvious it was the first game of the season for the squad, and showed in the nervous early exchanges with basic errors allowing North Dorset to capitalise on the disorganisation and open the scoring. Wimborne settled into a better rhythm after 20 minutes and battled back to score two tries to take the lead. Just before half time, North Dorset broke through and scored to retain the lead at the break.
The hosts extended their lead at the beginning of the second half and opened out a seven point lead to 19-12. The early score merely encouraged Wimborne though, and gradually they regained control at the breakdown and used the ball intelligently to command territory. They used the driving maul to great effect, and sapped the legs of the defence. The tries in the last twenty minutes were the result of composure and good decision making in attack coupled with intense pressure in defence to force errors and turnover possession.
A tough first game of the season, and Wimborne will look forward to the return fixture in March.
