A Captains view of 2016/17 - The Highs & Lows!
The 2016/2017 season was always going to be a tough one for the senior sides. Over the previous season we had lost a couple senior players, and at times struggled with numbers.
Everything seemed to be looking pretty good though as we rolled through a summer of beach training; numbers were high, training was structured and there was a real buzz about the players! I suppose the luxury of training on the beach will always draw in a few players but regardless, it was an awesome was to start what was shaping up to be a lively season.
Management organised a pre-season tour to Bristol which was absolutely stand out. We took so many players we were struggling with rotations and some players only got 20 minutes (not that rugby was particularly high on the agenda by that point).
Our first real test was when the weather started to turn, and pitches at times became almost unplayable. Previous seasons we had averaged maybe 12 players, and I know speaking to guys at other clubs they were in the same situation, we when were making some serious progress. The coaches and managers had secured us a decent winter training field, fully flood lit, and we were consistently getting 25+ guys to training!
Despite a shaky patch where the 1st team was plagued with injuries through October, we went pretty much unbeaten from November until our penultimate game of the season. We travelled away on some pretty dark, wet days with multiple changes in the squad..but the relentless commitment and positive attitude of the players, coaches and supports shone through!
We managed to all but secure promotion to SW1 4 games from the end of the season with a solid away victory at Swans, which from my point was an amazing achievement, and something I was so proud to be a part of. Even knowing this, attendance to training was spot on and the squad looked seriously strong putting on 140 points in 4 games!
It was attitude and spirit that pushed us through the season. Week in week out the clubhouse was a fantastic place to be, and it was one of those seasons we will always look back on with a smile both on and off the pitch!
Roll on pre-season 2017/2018!!
