Wimborne finish the season with a flourish
Tries: Sean Murphy(2), Jack Newton(2), Jack Mason(2), Miles Corbin, Tom Lofts, Dylan Case
Conversions : Paul Roberts(6)
Wimborne rounded off their league season with the most comprehensive victory of the season scoring over fifty points for the first time during the campaign.
Wimborne had Doug Robertson and Jack Newton back in the three-quarter line, Dylan Case moved to scrum half and Terence Galdes making his final appearance before returning to Malta.
The season had started back in September when Wimborne travelled to Bicester and came away with a narrow victory, but on this occasion of the return fixture, Wimborne held the upper hand throughout. With the temperatures rising and on a very firm pitch, Wimborne were intent in finishing off the season with a flourish and were soon on the scoreboard when after six minutes Sean Murphy was on hand to secure the first score which was converted by Paul Roberts.
Back came Bicester though and reduced the Wimborne lead with two well taken penalties.
The remainder of the half was all Wimborne though and further tries followed from Murphy, his second of the match, and then from the powerfully running Jack Newton to stretch the home side’s lead to 17-6.
Bicester were suffering from a succession of injuries although Wimborne themselves were equally disrupted by losing two players to the sin bin. Nevertheless they were able to cement their dominance in the half when just prior to half time Jack Mason went over for a well taken try to bring up a 22-6 half time score line.
Wimborne effectively put the match out of sight within the first five minutes of the restart when Mason scored again, converted by Roberts.
To Bicester’s credit though they fought back to soon score their first try of the match and thereafter, for the mid part of the half, frustrated Wimborne somewhat as the match became somewhat disjointed.
In the final quarter though Wimborne’s fitness began to tell and in all they were able to run in four further tries from Corbin, a first senior score for Tom Lofts, Case and a second for Newton which were all converted by Roberts.
There was still time for Bicester to bag their second try late on but by then the match was well won by Wimborne.
For Wimborne this rounded off a season of ups and downs back in South West One where their early season form and revitalised performances at the end of the campaign provided more than adequate to remain in this level for next season.
