High scoring match gives Wimborne a further bonus point

.

Tries: Ashton Kerley(2), Sean Murphy, Declan Foley
Conversions: Paul Roberts(4)
Penalty: Paul Roberts

Wimborne travelled to north Oxfordshire on Saturday for their final away trip of the season to play Banbury who themselves were still in with an outside chance of catching Old Patesians at the top of the league.
Following the confidence boosting victories in the previous two matches which had secured their league status, Wimborne had skipper Declan Foley as well as evergreen Jason Llewellyn, Ben Hunt and Ashton Kerley back in the starting line up and long term injured players Sean Murphy and George Carter on the bench.
Despite their optimism Wimborne were hit hard in the first half by the strong Banbury back line just had been the case in the earlier fixture at Leigh Park in December. The home team racked up no less than five tries in the half with Wimborne’s only reply being a Paul Roberts penalty goal to go into the half time break at 3-29.
The second half was altogether different and although Banbury extended their lead after Ashton Kerley touched down Wimborne began to get themselves more and more into the game with their forwards in particular putting in an impressive shift.
Further tries followed from Murphy and Foley only to be cancelled out by two further tries for the home team which brought up the 50 points for Banbury going into the final phases of the match.
Bonus points have played a big part in Wimborne’s season and yet again despite being on the end of a heavy defeat they kept going and achieved a fourth try late on when Kerley went over for his second score on the day. Paul Roberts converted from wide out to round off an impressive kicking display.
As has been the case all season Wimborne demonstrated that at times they compete well with the stronger teams in the league but need to be able to reproduce this on a consistent basis.
Wimborne finish off their season with a home match against bottom of the table Bicester at Leigh Park this Saturday and will be looking to go out on a high note.
