Four tries, one bonus point and Victory for Wimborne

.

Tries: Max Hewson, Penalty try, Jack Newton, Jack Mason
Conversion: Connor Carpenter

Wimborne were able to ease their relegation woes somewhat on Saturday when an impressive first half performance bagged them four tries and a bonus point to send them on their way to an important victory over first time visitors to Leigh Park from Stratford upon Avon.
Wimborne welcomed Doug Robertson back in the centre for his first match for a number of months, Jack Newton on the wing for his first match at Leigh Park and Connor Carpenter and Robbie Holman on starting debuts at fly half and hooker respectively. Unfortunately the latter succumbed to an early ankle injury so yet again Wimborne had to make changes somewhat sooner than ideal.
Wimborne were intent on keeping the game as open as possible and to move the much larger visiting forward pack around as much as possible. This paid dividends after about ten minutes when full Back Max Hewson was up in support to take the scoring pass.
Stratford came back with a penalty after Wimborne infringed but soon extended the lead when it looked as if Hewson was again going to make the corner only to be tackled high giving referee Dave Allan no option but to award a seven points penalty try.
Wimborne kept their foot on the gas and not long after were rewarded with a third score when again they got the ball wide and Newton showed impressive strength to force his way over in the left corner.
Stratford did reply with a further penalty goal but approaching the break Wimborne sealed the bonus point when Jack Mason, who had been causing the visitors defence all afternoon, powered his way through a number of attempted tackles to score near the posts. Carpenter converted and sent Wimborne into half time with an impressive 24-6 lead.
The second half was an all together different affair. Wimborne started brightly and looked as if they would increase their advantage but gradually Stratford began to dominate possession and for the final twenty five minutes of the half camped out in Wimborne territory.
Wimborne defended resolutely though and other than allowing Stratford in for one try successfully managed to repel all other attempts to cross their line.

This was an important bonus point win for Wimborne that has drawn then equal on points with Swindon and seven points clear of Marlow.
They will want to build on this improved performance with the visit to Leigh Park of Witney in two weeks time.
