Wimborne lose to a well drilled Oxford side

No bonus points this week

Tries: Newton (1), Maidment (1)
Conversions: Maidment (2)
Penalty: Maidment (1)

After the previous week’s break, Wimborne travelled to Oxford on Saturday to play Oxford Harlequins for the first encounter since the 2002/03 season when Harlequins won the old South West 2 East division.
Wimborne were much changed from the previous match due to injuries and unavailability with no less than six different players coming in and Newton and Hay making their debuts, and as has been the trend on the road this season Wimborne succumbed to a very early try out on the right wing within the first three minutes of the match.
In the first half Wimborne were playing against the near gale force wind and despite getting a good share of possession were finding it difficult to get out of their own half in the far from clement conditions. To their credit though they largely kept their hosts at bay and the only other score conceded was a penalty goal right in front of the posts to ease Harlequins into an 8-0 lead.
Just when it looked like this would be the half time score, in the final minute before the break Wimborne failed to clear their lines and the Harlequins full back ran the ball back, breaking through more than one attempted tackle to score in the corner.
Wimborne started the second Half with greater purpose without ever really being able to raise their game or gain any dominance over the home team. A penalty goal by Ryan Maidment, entrusted with the goal kicking this week, did put Wimborne on the scoreboard only for Harlequins to cancel this out with a penalty goal in response for a 16-3 score line.
When Oxford scored their third try, approaching the sixty minutes mark, to extend their lead it looked as if any chance of Wimborne securing anything from this match might have gone with it. An opportune interception around half way by Jack Newton allowing him to run in unopposed under the posts did momentarily raise some hopes of a final quarter revival but this was quickly repelled when Wimborne were penalised close to their line and the resultant penalty stretched the home side’s lead to 24-10.

Wimborne were not entirely done though and after a series of drives at the Harlequins line Maidment wriggled over for a try he converted himself to at least put Wimborne within bonus point territory.
Unfortunately Wimborne failed to deal with the resultant kick off and when they were penalised yet again close in the accurate Harlequins kicker slotted over the kick at goal to secure the victory and deny Wimborne anything from what had been a blustery encounter throughout.
Next week Wimborne return to Leigh Park with Royal Wootton Bassett being the visitors.
