Away v Bournemouth RFC Lost 17--12

Round 4 in the pool phase of this years competition and another away match, this time at our local rivals. Based on recent results this match would be crucial to our prospects of progressing in the cup competition, but Bournemouth were unbeaten thus far in the pool and our matches are always tight and fiercely competitive. The boys all know each other well, either from school, DPP, County or Bath Academy. The pitch had held up well during the wet weather, but was fairly soft and handling would be most likely be tricky. In recent times we had managed to get out of the habit of starting slowly, but it looked like the old ways had returned and we let in an early try due to soft tackling. The scrum had however started well and whilst we were clearly smaller and lighter than our hosts, we certainly had the upper hand. Missed tackles from a handling mistake by the opposition in our 22 left us flat footed and led to another frustrating try. 12-0 down and in general we weren't playing well, and were making too many mistakes, but some impetus was gained when Johannes broke down the right wing and looked to have crossed in the corner, only to be called back for nicking the touchline. It was enough to galvanise the boys into action and a period of pressure led to Barnaby forcing his way over from close range next to the posts for a converted try just before the half time whistle, 12-7 didn't look too bad.

A half time call urging the boys to be quicker to the breakdown and use the ball better when in attack, seemed to have been heeded and we started brightly. But we kept making mistakes, and the opposition pressure in defence was very effective. We kicked too often, and poorly, in positions where the ball would've been better used more creatively and put through the hands. At the tackle too often we were getting isolated, and Bournemouth reacted much faster to get the first arriving player over the ball to stop the attack. A series of penalties however when we were driving forward with some much needed possession led to a sin-bin for one of their forwards, but we failed to capitalise on the extra numbers and soft tackling let their winger in for a try to extend the lead to 17-7. The boys reacted well, and through a series of tight exchanges forced the opposition back and Wiggy drove over to bring the score closer to 17-12. The last 10 minutes were played out mainly in the middle of the park, but were characterised by Bournemouth's excellent pressure defence and our inability to use the ball effectively.

A close defeat, and one that will rankle the boys because we made too many errors. Well played by the hosts, who consistently put us under pressure and didn't let us get any rhythm or continuity. One more pool match to go, and hopefully a place in the plate competition.
