After three weeks break since the heavy defeat at Chippenham, Wimborne returned to Leigh Park for the visit of Grove from Berkshire. This was a crucial match for both teams with the visitors equally looking for a result to claw themselves away from the relegation zone at the foot of the table.
Wimborne welcomed back the experience of Jason Llewellyn, Marcus Atkins and Ryan Maidment and, after eleventh hour call offs, were fortunate to be able to call in Doug Robertson for his first game since October and gave a debut to Will Grogan at flanker.

What followed was a roller coaster of a match when neither side got any clear supremacy over the other and the result was indeed hard to call until the very last play of the game.

In truth if Wimborne had been able to land any of a string of shots at goal throughout the match it might well have resulted in a less pulsating match when particularly in the second half the lead changed hands on numerous occasions.

Wimborne started brightly and landed the first score. A quickly taken penalty, and debutant Grogan was on hand to go over. Joe Bartlett converted to ease Wimborne into a 7- 0 lead.
Grove got a try of their own before Wimborne fashioned a move down the left wing and Charlie Parry came in to the line and Miles Corbin was on hand and, despite the attentions of three defenders, was able to cross the line wide out.
Grove reduced the arrears with a penalty in front of the posts but the vital score in the half was secured by Wimborne when the ever dangerous Lewis Mitchell acrobatically stretched for the line after Paul Roberts had created an opportunity. This sent Wimborne in to the break with a 17-8 advantage.

It was Grove who started strongly in the second half and after scoring a converted try and a penalty goal, had within ten minutes of the re start, eased ahead by one point.
Thereafter the match swung one way and then the other. Twice Wimborne got their noses in front. Firstly Mitch Stainer, on off the bench, ran the race to touchdown just inside the dead ball line, after an astute kick ahead from Roberts. Then it was Mitchell again who won the race wide out after Wimborne had stretched the creaking Grove defence. But to the visitors' credit, they would not lie down and twice fought back to take a single point advantage. On the second occasion going in to the last three minutes of normal time when they sucked the Wimborne defence in and scored out wide it looked for all the world that they had secured their own bonus point win.

Trailing 27-28, Wimborne had to secure possession from the kick off and did so. Sensing their opportunity, somehow managed to create an overlap with man of the match Grogan being the player on hand to fittingly take the final match winning pass to secure the victory.

For Wimborne this ended a losing run of matches and hopefully banished some of the pre Christmas demons.
Next week they will hope to build on this performance with a trip to bottom of the table Marlow for an equally crucial encounter.
