Festival Reports

Bournemouth Festival 19th April
We arrived at a sunny Chapel Gate looking forward to the day's events given the boys' performance on tour over the Easter weekend.
The pitches were the largest that we had played on all year and should have suited our style of play. We were in a group with Bournemouth, Launceston, Eastleigh and Wootton Bassett, three teams that we had not played against this year and first up were the hosts.

Bournemouth 0 - Wimborne 20
The boys started slowly but managed to put some good individual pieces of play together and we eventually ran out winners by 4 tries to nil with everyone in the squad getting a run out in the first game. Try scorers Luke 2, Alex M 1, & Reuben 1.

Launceston 0 - Wimborne 10
This was a stronger test for the squad with Launceston having a couple of boys who were a lot bigger than ours and we ended up getting in to a mauling game which played right in to their hands. Our defence again remained strong with some big tackles, fronting up to their strong running close to our line. The effort and commitment from the lads could not be faulted. We deservedly scored two tries from Tom and Alex S and continued on to our next challenge despite not playing our best rugby.

Eastleigh 0 - Wimborne 30
Having watched Eastleigh play, we were able to see that they would be the weaker opposition of the group. The coaches got the boys together and we all agreed that we wanted to play a running and passing game and, to their credit, the boys stuck to their words and played some great running rugby with the ball being off loaded quickly and passing through the team. We made a number of positional changes and it resulted in the following boys scoring, Ollie L 2, Alex M 1, Oscar 2 and Joe 1.

Wootton Bassett 0 - Wimborne 10
This was the second set of all blacks that we had played against today and, true to the name, they played with the same tenacity and stretched the boys on occasions but our defence remained resolute and despite a couple of scares they never got that close to our line. We were unable to get our running game together for the whole match and it happened in fits and starts resulting in tries for Luke and Alex S.

Unbeaten in the group we now progressed to the semi final against Ringwood & Ellingham- one of our local rivals, with the other one played out between Salisbury and Bridgend.

Ellingham & Ringwood 0 - Wimborne 20
This was a much better game and the boys knew that they were in for a good game as they renewed old acquaintances. Both teams started strongly with the E&R fly half making some good breaks but our defence, with Oscar playing the full back role, swatting anyone who had broken through gave the boys in front great confidence. We managed to get our passing and off loading game back as well as the pressure that we put on in defence. We ran out worthy winners with some fine tries from Tom 1, Luke 2 and Ollie L 1.

Next up was the final against Bridgend whose squad had won their age group at the tournament last year. This was a real bruising encounter which you would expect from a Welsh team and both sides played with determination and vigour. The commitment to the tackle and contact situations from the Welsh team was better than we had come up against all day and proved to be their strength as both sides were pretty well matched. It was end to end stuff and just before half time Bridgend managed to cross our line for a score in the corner. It was a bruising encounter and we rotated all the boys in the squad on to the park throughout the game. The second half continued as the first had left off with Wimborne trying to recover that score to get us level again. The Bridgend defence remained firm despite some surging runs from the boys. The lads showed fantastic commitment to the cause which was borne out by a 30 yard track back from Luke to put in the tackle of the day on their flying winger. Despite all our attempts to cross the line we were unable to do so and we conceded a dubious try on the last whistle with their player seemingly in touch. We lost the game 10 - 0 and Bridgend were worthy winners and good opponents to play against.

Squad:- Tom Andrews, Joe Burden, Reuben Elcock, Max Hewson, Oscar Howard, Ollie Longmore, Max Mallinson, Alex Mason, Tom Mayhew, Luke Mehson, Alex Sands, Jack Stonell, Ollie Weekley, Charlie Whitham.

Dorchester Festival 19 April 2009

The Dorchester Festival attracted some strong teams for a tournament played on large pitches in bright Spring sunshine. We faced two teams in our group - Winchester and Dorchester.

First up were Winchester - a strong team who had already beaten Dorchester by a wide margin. We put in some good tackles, but we could not sustain our defence consistently as Winchester attacked repeatedly and won comfortably.

The second game against Dorchester was much closer. We tackled more consistently, with Eddie, William and Sebastian leading the way. We attacked more effectively - Eddie and Jamie used their pace to exploit the width of the pitch while Nick and Matthew used their strength to drive forward in the tight. We also passed more fluently, with one counter attack involving almost every member of the team. Ollie and Jack formed a good half back pairing, providing good penetration and quick ball to the fast boys outside. Unfortunately we could not convert our pressure into points, and Dorchester scored breakaway tries to seal the match. However our boys deserve credit for competing well against strong opposition.

Squad - Matthew Buckfield, TJ Crocker, Nick Wetherall, Lawrence Smith, Sebastian Hartley, Ollie Walker, Jack Taylor, Eddie Wilkinson, William Hurd Wood, Angus Livesey, Jamie Tointon

London Irish St Patrick's Party Matchday Festival

At 6 a.m. on a beautifully sunny Mother's Day, 12 very excited lads, assorted weary dads and disgruntled mums set off for Reading for the U9s to take part in the London Irish St Patrick's Party Matchday Festival.

The tournament was organised into 2 pools of 5 teams, with the pool finalists getting the opportunity to play their final during half time of the London Irish v. Northampton Saints match at the Madjeski Stadium!

Our first match was a slow burner against Redingensians where our lads ran out 2-0 winners.
Try scorers: Tom Andrews, Alex Mason

Then we played Reading B and the play heated up along with the weather. The lads were able to put into practice all those well rehearsed set pieces and drills leading to a final score of 6-0.
Try scorers: Tom Andrews, Reuben Elcock, Oscar Howard, Alex Mason, Luke Mehson (2)

Next up were Reading B, who were really Reading's A side, but the team weren't fazed. Excellent team work, in defence and going forward, saw them to a comfortable 4-0 win.
Try scorers: Tom Andrews, Reuben Elcock, Oscar Howard, Luke Mehson

Our final pool game was against Alton. Again, the players delivered with some excellent individual performances & great teamwork, with the match ending 6-0 in our favour.
Try scorers: Tom Andrews, Reuben Elcock (2), Max Mallinson, Luke Mehson, Ollie Weekley

We had finished top of our group without conceding a try and having scored 7 more tries than the winners of the other group. The boys had played well and were starting to execute moves based on what they saw in front of them. Players and parents alike were really excited by the prospect of a final against Farnham, winners of the other pool, also undefeated in the pool matches, at the Madjeski Stadium.

And so it was, during the half time interval, that the 4 age group finals took place simultaneously, in front of a 22,000 strong crowd. Wimborne lost the toss and so control of the ball; the final was a close fought contest, the Farnham team had a couple of strong lads and their rucking was the best that we had come up against all day. The Farnham lads attacked right from the start and the play had all the parents on the edge of their seats. Eventually, despite heroic defending Farnham crossed our line to score. Undeterred by this, the boys' came back strongly and put the opposition's defence to the test. Despite some strong attacks, Wimborne were unable to cross the opposition line and we were beaten by a strong, well drilled Farnham team. The lads had conceded only one try all day and played as a squad throughout the day.
Although the final ended 1-0 to Farnham, the lads were rightly proud of their fantastic performances, and exemplary conduct, throughout the day.

The day culminated in a medal presentation by London Irish captain and Ireland International, Bob Casey.
A great experience for all involved. Well done, fellas!

Squad: Tom Andrews, Reuben Elcock, Max Hewson, Oscar Howard, Oliver Longmore, Max Mallinson, Alex Mason, Luke Mehson, Louis Pratten, Jack Stonell, Oliver Weekley, Eddie Wilkinson

Winchester Festival

click for larger image
With near perfect conditions at Winchester for their Festival, the boys were looking to improve on their previous New Milton performances and they did not disappoint.
There were a number of changes to the squad with some new boys getting the opportunity to play in a Festival for the first time and all of them gave it their best efforts.

The first match was against Salisbury which was a really tight and close fought affair which could have gone either way right up to the last seconds of the game, a disallowed try for two movements stopped us drawing the game but the tackling and team work was a real delight to see and everyone was definitely up for the challenge.

Next we played Chichester who are a new fixture to us, the boys built on the first game and despite going a try down they came back to level in yet another close game. This time the support play and tackling against a bigger Chichester side saw the play going from end to end. The final result was a 3-2 defeat to a try scored in one of the last plays of the second half.

We then had a little break to enjoy the sun and also watch the other teams.
Winchester was the next match and rather disappointingly we started poorly and went three scores down before the team started to play as they had done in the previous game. The boys began to fight back and got on the scoring sheet again and the opposition then knew they were in a game. The second half was drawn but Winchester had won the game with some strong and elusive runners and missing the first up tackles cost us dearly.

The last game in the league was against Vectis from the Isle of Wight. This again was an extremely close game with two well matched sides even if a couple of their boys were a good head above our lads. We opened the scoring and managed to contain their strong runners for most of the game. Vectis came back and drew level and we then took the lead again only to give away another try. The boys then dug deep and put together some superb rugby, supporting each other and passing the ball through the back line which was to pay dividends with us scoring the final try and winning the match.

The difference from three months ago was vast and all credit should go the players and also the coaches on the day Richard Jones & Matt Walker.

With Festivals at Dorchester and Wimborne coming up there are still areas to be worked on but also plenty to be proud about.
Well played to the following boys; Morgan Ball, Matthew Buckfield, Joe Burden, Joshua Clark, Jay Jones, Jordan Kimber, Angus Livesey, Tom Mayhew, Charles Pilato, Alex Sands, Lawrence Smith, Jamie Tointon, Oliver Walker & Charlie Whitham.

New Milton 'B' Festival

The New Milton Festival went ahead on Sunday despite the best efforts of the weather, and the squad assembled on a blustery morning ready for their first Festival.

They were pitted against Oakmeadians, Bournemouth and Havant in the league stages. The first game was against Oaks and having beaten them the previous week, the boys were quietly confident. The match started and we were very quickly two tries down against a mixed Oaks squad. The boys then started to play and got into their stride with some strong running and solid tackles which regained possession for their team. Oaks however scored again and we turned around at half time 4 tries down. The second half was much better with tackles a plenty and we scored a superb try, winning the half but losing the match 4 tries to one. The boys played really well in this match against a strong mixed Oaks squad.

The next game was against Bournemouth and following on from the first game the boys attacked with vigour and tackled like demons. Both teams were evenly matched and the support play and commitment from all the lads was evident throughout. The final whistle saw us run out worthy winners 3 tries to two despite having one disallowed.

Next came Havant who had a number of boys a good head taller than most of our squad. We gave away two early scores but then realised that not even they could run without their legs and the boys double tackled with great tenacity. We came back at them scoring two excellent tries but unfortunately Havant also managed a couple more scores and the match finished 5 tries to two in favour of Havant.

With this result, we finished third in the league stages and were through to the semi-final of the plate competition where we were up against Winchester. Winchester were also a big side and it was almost a game too far for the boys. We conceded early tries again and found ourselves up against it. However, all the boys showed great determination and teamwork to get scores back, with two outstanding team tries, however Winchester ended up winning the game six tries to two.

The boys had given their all throughout the Festival and will have learnt a lot today playing in this type of environment and they should all be very proud of their achievements. Similar to the Salisbury Festival, I have deliberately not singled anyone out from Sunday as they all played together really well as a Team. Unfortunately my list of try scorers blew away when I was refereeing the Plate Final.

The matches have given us some areas to work on in training over the next few weeks and I am sure that the boys are now looking forward to their next round of games.

Squad: Morgan Ball, Matthew Buckfield, Joe Burden, Joshua Clark, Thomas Crocker, Reuben Elcock, Sebastian Hartley, William Hurd-Wood, Jay Jones, Jordan Kimber, Angus Livesey, Tom Mayhew, Charles Pilato

The rest of the boys played a home fixture against Bridport and from the coaches' feedback; they played some exciting rugby, strong in the tackle and quick in attack. There were some big hits and also some good link play to score the tries. They won nine tries to nil. Special thanks should go out to Eddie Wilkinson who played for the opposition who turned up with only 8 players and also to Peter Taylor who refereed his first match. Well done.

Salisbury Festival

Festival Winners - click for larger image
This was our first outing against other opposition since starting contact this season as the New Milton Festival was postponed due to adverse weather. The coaches kept with the same squad and the boys met at Salisbury at 9:30 to get ready for our first game. The festival consisted of ten teams playing in two leagues. The winners of each league would then play off in the main cup with the runners up playing against each other in the plate final.

Our league was made up of Salisbury 2, North Dorset, New Milton and Marlborough. The other league made of Salisbury 1, Bradford on Avon, Topsham, Vectis IOW and Devizes.

The first game put us up against Salisbury 2 and any concerns around the contact/tackling were soon dispelled and the boys started with a BANG! By the end of the first half we were 4 tries to 0 up and after the final whistle we had won 6 tries to 0.

In the second game we were up against a free running North Dorset team and our tackling and physicality put them on their back feet and out of their stride. We finished up winning 5 tries to 0. We then played our rivals, New Milton, who had really mastered the rucking game. It was a good contest which we ended up winning 4 tries to 1. This was the first try we had conceded.

By this stage we were top of the group with Marlborough to play to see who finished on top. This was a close encounter, with both sides fully committed in attack and defence. However, the boys stuck to their task and came out worthy winners 2 tries to 0.

This put us in the final against Bradford on Avon. We took an early lead and then built on this throughout the game; our defence was second to none and the speed of the boys left their opponents chasing their shadows. We finished up winning 4 tries to 0.

Throughout the tournament we were able to rotate players with each boy playing in every game. The squad played fantastically well, physical in the tackle and quick to find space to score tries. I have deliberately not singled any of the boys out because they all played their part. We scored 21 tries and conceded only 1. This gives us a great platform to build on throughout the season. Well Played Wimborne!

Squad: Tom Andrews, Max Hewson, Oscar Howard, Alex Mason, Luke Mehson, Max Mallinson, Ollie Longmore, Louis Pratten, Jack Stonell, Jack Taylor, Jamie Tointon, Oliver Weekley, Charlie Whitham, Eddie Wilkinson
Tries Scored: Luke - 6, Oscar - 4, Eddie - 3, Ollie L - 2, Alex - 2, Max M - 1, Tom - 1, Jack S - 1, Ollie W - 1

Ellingham & Ringwood
Whilst we had one squad at Salisbury, the other squad were at home hosting Ellingham and Ringwood Rugby club.
After some initial skills training, the boys played a long match against Ellingham and Ringwood with squad rotation throughout.
Reports from the coaches confirmed that again the boys were fully committed in the tackle. Whilst they eventually lost the game 7 tries to 4, there were some notable performances with Tom Mayhew, Morgan Ball and Reuben Elcock coming to the fore. Well played lads!

I am sure that everyone is now looking forward to the New Milton Festival on the 9th November.
