A hot day at Chapple gate produced some breathtaking rugby a chance to relax and then the disappointment of our first defeat in 10 games. Drawn in a group with Wooten Bassett, New Milton and Launceston it was going to be hard to predict any results with two travelling teams and a New Milton side that we had not faced this season.

First up was Launceston, Andy won the first contest of the day with the toss of a coin as to who should wear the bibs. Then it was down to the boys to do their stuff, they were really up for this. From the whistle Wimborne applied pressure and were trying all the moves from the training ground this was an encouraging start. With this continued pressure the first score of the day was achieved soon followed by a second try, Wimborne were dominant at the scummage and this allowed the backs space and time to play their game and make it 15 - 0 at half time. Second half changes were made in the pack but this made no difference to the way Wimborne played soon adding another try. With the sun beating down Wimborne then controlled the game and slowed it down to help save energy for the later games the final score Wimborne 20 Launceston 0.

Next Wootton Bassett, this time Andy was not so lucky and Wimborne were in bibs. This had no effect on the way they boys played, again they tried all the moves and more and more of them were working and the pack continued to dominate, news must have travelled around the grounds and the crowd grew and there were over 50 spectators watching some clinical rugby by Wimborne, Wootton had nothing in reply with Wimborne running away with the game the final score Wimborne 35 Wootton 0.

Next the crunch game against New Milton both teams had won their opening two games. It was a winner takes all encounter. This was by far Wimborne's hardest game for some time and they were unable to breakdown the New Milton defence. Time after time it looked like Wimborne would score but the final element was not there. At half time the scores were still level at 0 - 0. As the second half continued, the tension raised both teams knowing that a single try could mean the difference between cup and shield. With minutes to go New Milton had a break and a swift ball out wide found the gap and they were over for try. This was the first try Wimborne had conceded in 10 games of rugby something they should be very proud of.. Wimborne kicked off and the ball was chased down hard forcing an error by the New Milton back allowing Wimborne to score, however there were short lived celebrations as a knock on had been seen. The final whistle went and Wimborne had been beaten for the first time in 12 games of rugby. Wimborne 0 New Milton 5.

Into the Shield went Wimborne with a game against Hereford who had also only lost one game on the day. The Boys were tired and hot and the day had gone on a bit longer than most had expected. Unfortunately they had nothing left in the tank and went down 10 points to nil.

A good day and a wonderful warm up ready for the county cup next weekend. The team has now tasted defeat and I think I speak for everyone by saying we don't want to taste it again.
Well done for all the coaches and parents rest ready for next weekend and the County Cup.

Unfortunately only two teams showed up on a glorious sunny Sunday in Winchester and that was us and them. The Winchester coaches were very apologetic and it was decided that we would play 3 games of rugby of 7 minutes per half, with some training in between.

First up then was Winchester, some early pressure from the opposition gave them an early lead but the boys soon regrouped and starting to produce some good rugby and soon eqalised, Wimborne continued to put pressure on the Winchester pack and this gave space for the backs to produce another try giving Wimborne a 10 - 5 lead at half time. Some changes were made at half time and before Wimborne could regroup Winchester had drawn level. Again Wimborne managed to fight back and some swift passing down the left flank saw wimborne grab a third try and win 15 - 10.

Next up Winchester a much tougher encounter as the heat of the day rose. Some great defending by both teams meant the half time score of 0 - 0 was a fair reflection. Again changes were made but Winchester held on under wimborne pressure and the ref blew up for full time with neither team managing to break the deadlock.

An extra game was now thrown in which was to be Wimbornes undoing, Winchester made a team up of under 10 and under 11 to face the tiring Wimborne players. The Winchester team were well drilled and each player knew what was expected of them. Unfortunately the Wimborne players could not get a stranglehold of the game as Winchester ran out winners 20 - 5. This game however was not part of the triangle tournament.

The final game saw both teams looking for the win. Again both teams played good aggressive rugby with Winchester taking an early lead, however Wimborne were soon level and the score at half time was a fair reflection on how the game had gone. The second half saw Winchester get more of a hold on the game as legs got tired and unfortuantly Winchester ran out winners 15 - 5.

Unknown to the boys at the beginning of the day a certificate and medal was presented to each boy to go along with their Banana!!!!

You played well boys and I think everybody got some benefit out of the day, thanks to all the parents and well done from Sandy and Paul

At last the weather abated and allowed us to play some rugby. The under 11 county cup day was played at Weymouth.
Wimborne were drawn in the same group as Sherborne, Dorchester and local rivals Bourmouth.

First up was Sherborne, once the issue of who was wearing what colour had been resolved Wimborne got stuck into to what they do best and played rugby. The Wimborne pack did not give the opposition any chance to play their game and this allowed space for the backs to play some fine running rugby and allowed Wimborne to go in at half time 15 - 0. Some shuffling of players at half time again proved what a great squad we are lucky enough to have at Wimborne as what was to become the second half team for the day continued where the first half ended adding a further two scores the final score Wimborne 25 Sherborne 0

Next up Dorchester, a scrappy game saw the two packs trying to dominate, the Wimborne play was disrupted time and time again but when the ball did get out wide the backs did what was asked of them and crossed the try line, Half time 10 - 0 to Wimborne. Back came the second half team but still the forwards game was disrupted by Dorchester, eventually though Wimborne's physical play got the better of the dogged opposition and the final whistle went with Wimborne running out winners 25 - 0.

Next up Bournemouth, a win would see Wimborne secure top spot and a game against the pool B runners up. As always this was a fierce encounter with both sides producing some hard rugby Wimborne however soon had the better of their opposition and the tries came and a 15 - 0 half time score was a fair reflection on the game. The second half continued in much the same way as the first and the bruising encounter was brought to an end with Wimborne running out winners 25 - 0.

A short break in proceedings allowed the boys to catch their breath before the biggest game of the day, All they had done before would be for nothing if they lost the winner takes all semi-final against Weymouth. The boys looked confident as the walked onto the pitch and within 30 seconds of kick off Wimborne were 5 - 0 up. This was to be replicated on a regular basis with the boys playing some of their best rugby of the day. Hard forward play gave room for the backs to continue to play running rugby and the final score of 35 - 0 was nothing more than they deserved.

The team played some outstanding rugby and should be immensely proud of what they have achieved. They have now played 8 games of rugby without conceding a single point and scored over 200 points. Well done boys from the coaches and parents enjoy the next few weeks and lets look forward to a great County Cup final day against our local rivals Swanage and Wareham.

Forty tired and weary adults and children turned up at Wimborne Rugby Club to catch the coach for our day up at the Stoop to take part in the Landrover tournament followed by a the Harlequins Northampton premiership game.
All our opponents for the day would be for the first time. Teams would play each other once in a straight round robin winner takes all with games lasting 5 minutes per half.
Three points would be awarded for a win with two for a draw, score four tries or more and get a bonus point.

First up were Gosport and Fareham, the boys looked good as the walked out across the pitch and early pressure almost secured the first try of the day; however the confusing pitch markings meant that Wimborne were just short, they recycled well and the try was scored. There soon followed two more quick tries and Wimborne led 15 - 0 at halftime. Changes were made at half time and the depth of the Wimborne squad showed and there was no let up on the pressure being applied to the opposition. Shortly the bonus point was secured and then just before the final whistle a fifth try was added the final score 25 - 0 to Wimborne.

Next up were the tournament favourites. Richmond has a squad of over 80 players to choose from and have not been beaten all season. Wimborne were soon under pressure but some great defending and tackling saw the boys withstand everything Richmond could throw at them this continued until half time the score 0 - 0. The second half started as the first with Wimborne seeing very little of the ball in an attacking sense, again the defence stood firm. Wimborne started to get back into the game this time it was Richmond who showed their defensive qualities. The Wimborne pack were now putting pressure on the Richmond pack but neither team could find the elusive try the final score a thoroughly thrilling 0 - 0 draw.

Next up, Old Dartfordians. Wimborne new that nothing short of a victory would do. From the whistle Wimborne looked to stamp their authority on the game with the forwards and back linking up beautifully. Wimborne linked phases together which gave the space for the backs to break through for the only try of the half. The second half followed a similar pattern, the forwards then got their reward with the second try, soon followed was the third which wrapped up a 15 - 0 win.

The final game of the day saw Wimborne taking on Pullborough. A win would see Wimborne top of the table but a bonus point would make things difficult for Richmond who had a game in hand. Wimborne had lots of the ball but could not make it count and the Pullborough defence held firm. Wimborne continued to dominate and eventually the break through came and Wimborne led 5 - 0 at half time. Three second half tries would see Wimborne secure the bonus point. They continued to pressurise the Pullborough defence but could not get the ball to ground, eventually the try came but despite continued pressure the final whistle went with Wimborne coming out winners at 10 - 0.

Unfortunately other results meant that Richmond went on to be tournament winners but Wimborne can hold their heads up high having remained undefeated all day and without conceding a single point.

For the record Harlequins went on to win too, but being a Bath fan we won't go into that game.

Wimborne V Gosport & Fareham - 25-0
Wimborne V Richmond - 0-0
Wimborne V Old Dartfordians - 15-0
Wimborne V Pullborough - 10-0

Well done Boys from all the Coaches and Parents.

Wimborne Rugby Under 11's - Season 2008/09
Welcome Note to All Parents

We are keen to ensure that all participants, parent, coaches and children understand the approach we are taking to Under 11's rugby in the season 2008/09. Hopefully this letter will clarify this and we would appreciate the content being discussed between parents and children some time early in the new season. This letter also draws on the Age Group Guidance document issued as a general guide for all Mini and Youth age groups

Rugby for All
The most important part of this is our continuing support for the "Rugby for All" philosophy. This is an RFU led approach which establishes some principles for rugby for children. Generally this is about ensuring that the children enjoy their rugby and that as many as possible as given the opportunity to train and play. It is fundamental that these intentions take precedence over the need for the teams to win all their matches. That is not say that we do not want out teams to have a competitive edge or to win tournaments, but the overriding reason for their involvement is about participation. This should ensure, as we have found through our rugby playing careers (such as they are), establishing a physical resilience, recognition of the importance of teamwork and perhaps most importantly the development of lifelong friendships with other members of the group or squad. We have tried to maintain this philosophy in the seasons to date and hopefully the numbers of players that we have on our books is testament to this being successful.

The general approach therefore this season will be that for matches and for training teams will be mixed rather than graded into A/ B. All games within home and away matches will be on the mixed basis. However, we may also choose at the end of a morning when we have an opposition present, to play a higher level team. Very often the opposition request this to test themselves against our best team.

In addition to the above we will also be targeting three tournaments in the Season 2008/09. This approach is explained in the Age Groups Guidance Document under the Selection Policy section. This year we will target the following tournaments - New Milton (October), Bournemouth (April) and our own tournament at Wimborne. For these tournaments we will explicitly be selecting an A team and one (or two) B teams. Therefore for the Salisbury tournaments and others we will be taking mixed teams or emerging teams, in the latter case where there are tournaments specifically labelled as such. There may also be tournaments that we are invited to during the season and we will have to decide precisely what type of team we should send and communicate this to you.

We also have to be aware of the amount of rugby the children are playing; there are RFU rules as to the number of matches and tournaments in which the children are playing.

Squad System
We also recognise that it is helpful for the children to play regularly with the same players at least for some of the time. Therefore we are adopting a squad arrangement whereby early in the season we will pick two squads of players that will form the basis of the even teams that we select. They will train and play together on a week to week basis. The two squads will be called the Sharks and the Jets. The specific sessions for backs and forwards will override this squad system i.e. all forwards and backs will train together in these sessions. The squads will then be remixed at half term, Christmas / New Year and again at half term in the Spring term.
Fitness
As the children get bigger, quicker and stronger their physical fitness will become more important. There will therefore be an increasing element of this during our training sessions. We are considering adding in Wednesday evening session sessions which will major on fitness although they will also involve use of a rugby ball as well. Anything you can do to improve your own child's fitness away from rugby, will undoubtedly also help. You also must excuse the coaches taking these issues up with you and the children - we are aware that we are not paragons of virtue on the diet or exercise front ourselves!!
Communications
We will endeavour to keep communicating with parents both verbally at training sessions and by email. Indication of selection, directions and timings will also be by email. Training will start at 9:30am sharp - children are expected to be available on the field, with boots gum shields etc in place at this time.

Please take the opportunity to speak on a one to one basis with any of the coaches or Simon Phillips as Lead Coach, if there are particular issues that wish to be raised or resolved. You do have recourse to the Committee if you issues are not adequately addressed within the age group, but we would prefer to be able to address any items raised within the age group if possible.

Laws for the Under 11s Age Groups
There are some changes to rules that we expected in moving from 10's to 11's. These are the introduction of kicking and the addition of one more back and two more forwards. Thus the backs will have a scrum half, stand off (fly half), two centres, two wingers and a full back. The forwards will have two props and a hooker and two second row (locks). The scrums and lineouts will become more technical and require more specific coaching than they have had previously. However, we will still be intending to play a fast open type of game where the ball is transferred quickly to the outside backs. This style will increasingly depend on the fitness as well as the skill levels of the children.

The other laws that have changed are titled the Experimental Law Variations (ELVs). These have been tried in the southern hemisphere and the following have been adopted for our age group:

  • " The offside line at a scrum will be 5 metres back from the hindmost foot, rather than the hindmost foot itself "

Summary
I hope you have found this letter useful in explicitly stating what our approach to the rugby season for the U11's is intended to be. If there are any other areas you feel we have neglected please let us know and we will endeavour to address these. The intention is that we do this at the beginning of season so that the approach is clear from the start.

I hope that you and your child or children enjoy the coming season both socially and rugby wise.

The Coaches

Under 11's Social and Club Events 2008/09

This season we have a number of events and fund raisers to organise. I hope wee can continue to rely on the usual suspects who assist in the organisation as well as getting involved on the days.

Wimborne Tournament Chiefly it is our year to organise the end of season tournament. Karen is planning on recruiting an internal committee from our age group with responsibilities being handed out centrally to other age groups. There will be more information to come and any suggestions of how we can raise as much money as possible will be very well received.

The Tour After 2 very successful tours to the Isle of Wight we have decided to stay on the mainland this year but not break the formula, therefore we will be heading off to Beam House in North Devon. We will be leaving on Friday 10th April which is in the school holidays and returning on Sunday 12th April. Our aim is to keep the costs the same at £110 per person, again more info to come but we will be taking deposits of £50 asap. We will be taking two mini buses and a maximum of 30 people players, parents, siblings. As with last year parents are not required but most welcome! http://www.pgl.co.uk/PGLWeb/individuals/centres/BeamHouse.htm - first come first served!

Fund Raising Finally Simon has managed to get hold of a rather special rugby ball from last season's game between Bath and Sale that has been signed by both teams as well as being the actual match ball. We will be raffling this off much to Lewis's disgust as an age group fund raiser. We intend to subsidise some kit for the squad in the shape of tracksuit bottoms and training tops. The total cost will be £1000 for 35 sets so the more funds we can raise the more we can pay for. Please help us to sell as many tickets as possible there should be a lot of Bath fans around!
