The Ellingham &
Wimborne under 18's girl's rugby team completed an amazing "hat trick"
on Sunday when they won the Land Rover London and SE 7's Tournament
at Dorking. This was the third trophy that they have won in three
weeks
The Ellingham
& Wimborne girl's comfortably won their group, beating Letchworth
40-5, Folkestone Fillies 20-0 and local rivals Solent Sirens 30-0.
In the semi final, the New Forest side faced a tough game against
Welwyn, who were runners up in the league and who were out for revenge
following their league defeat in January. However, the Ellingham
& Wimborne girl's held their nerve and eventually won the game comfortably
35-5, despite losing their influential prop Donna Rose, who had
to be taken to hospital where she had 15 stitches in a bad gash
to her leg following a freak accident in the second half. This win
meant that the Ellingham & Ringwood girl's had to face Dorking,
the hosts, in the final in what turned out to be a thrilling game.
The home side were cheered on by a noisy partisan crowd and took
an early lead when Kay Wilson scored from an impressive break, but
Harriet Waller quickly equalised when she finished a well worked
try. Soon after the kick off Wilson scored again, but once more
the Ellingham & Wimborne girl's equalised when Charlotte Benson
crossed the line. Dorking were unlucky not to get another score
when a refereeing decision went against them, but eventually, the
New Forest side ran out as the comfortable winners, with a further
2 tries from Poppy Cleall, and Jasmine Clarke who scored a second
half "hat trick". Dorking added a late score to make the final score
35-15
The final was unfortunately held up and moved to another pitch due
a Dorking player suffering a badly broken leg. We have had an update
from Dorking and the player has had an operation on her leg and
should make a full recovery. All the girls and coaches wish her
a speedy recovery.
This week end
the squad enjoy a well earned rest, before finishing their season
at the end of the month, when they will be competing in the National
7's at Harpenden Hertfordshire.

Worthing 10's
|
|
After winning the
London & South East league last week, the Ellingham & Wimborne Under
18's girl's rugby team continued their success on Sunday when they won
the prestigious Worthing 10's Tournament.
The
Ellingham & Wimborne girl's comfortably won their group without conceding
a point, with wins against Caerphilly Tigers 38-0, Folkestone Fillies
34-0 and Paviors 32-0
In the quarter final, the New Forest side faced a tough game against
Aylesford Bulls They conceded their first try of the day in the second
half, but fortunately tries from Bryony Cleall, Charlotte Benson and
Rose Tugwell had all scored good individual tries in the first half
with 2 being converted by Harriet Waller 19-5
They progressed to the semi final against newly crowned Kent/Sussex
league winners Basford. This was expected to be another tough game,
but tries from Bryony Cleall 2, Jasmine Clarke 3, Harriet Waller and
Donna Rose took them to a comfortable 41-0 to the final against favourites
Reading. Reading had not lost a game all season and last week had
qualified for the final of the National Cup where they will meet Worcester.
They are also the only side to have beaten the Ellingham & Wimborne
girl's this season, so a great final game was expected and the crowd
were not disappointed.
Both sides played some ferocious, but very skill full rugby. Fortunately
Ellingham & Wimborne got off to a flying start when Jasmine Clarke
scored a superb break away try that was converted by Harriett Waller.
Charlotte Benson then made a tremendous break, but was tackled just
short of the line. Tremendous support play from scrum half Gracie
New, resulted in her taking the off load and touching down in the
corner to give the Ellingham & Wimborne girls a 12-0 lead at half
time.
In the second half, Reading came back strongly and Lizzie Hearn scored
a well worked try under the posts, which she converted, to bring the
score to 12-7. Reading spent the rest of the game pressing the Ellingham
& Wimborne line, but their defence held allowing them to win their
second trophy in consecutive weeks.
Next
week end the side travel to Dorking to compete in the London 7's and
at the end of the month, they will be competing in the National 7's.

Dorking 17 - 48 Ellingham & Wimborne U18
|

The girls' U18's were crowned as London and South East league champions
for the 3rd successive season at Dorking after a 48-17 win, finishing
their league undefeated.
Emma Lipsett started off the scoring with 2 tries on left wing,
followed by a try from Hooker Anna White converted by Bryony Cleall.
Dorking came back strongly scoring two unconverted tries, leaving
the score 17-10 at half time. Some excellent Rugby in the second
half resulted in three tries for Bryony and one each for Jazz Clarke
and Harriet Waller with Bryony kicking three conversions. Dorking
then scored a late consolation try which they converted.
Well done girls,
a brilliant effort from a great bunch of girls and a fitting end
to the season proper for the older girls' last season.
Stop Press.......
Wimborne girls win Worthing 10s tournament. A stunning effort from
the younger girls, has seen them beat off much older competition
from Reading to win the Worthing 10s. With only one of the older
girls able to play at Worthing, it was left to Jess Weymouth to
lead the younger girls to a stunning victory.

Chobham U18 0 - 24 Ellingham & Wimborne U18
|
As our regular
sports commentator Lisa was on holiday, I'm afraid the report is
not of the usual quality, but here goes:
The girls visited Chobham RFC for their penultimate league match
after a disappointing cup fixture the previous week at Reading with
a severely under-strength side. This match was a different story
altogether, with an almost full strength side. Undefeated in the
league so far, this was going to be a tricky feature against a potentially
dangerous side with several regional players and a TDG scrum half
and the girls were warned not to underestimate the opposition.
The first half
started like the game was going to continue with a lot of fast ball
and Chobham's early opportunity foiled when their ball carrier decided
to kick and chase rather than run the ball which proved to be a
mistake against Wimborne's faster backs. Chobham were then awarded
one of their many penalties which they elected to kick, but fortunately
for Wimborne, missed. After some to-ing and fro-ing in the middle
of the pitch, with Wimborne's wingers looking dangerous, the (almost)
inevitable happened (twice) with Jazz breaking through on the wing
to run in two tries. Unfortunately for Bryony the conversions she
was left with were out on the wing and so went unconverted. First
half 10-0 to Wimborne.
The second half
continued much in the same vein with Wimborne's ability to get the
ball to where it was needed and the runners' ability to know when
to run and when to pass the difference. Although Chobham came very
close to scoring yet again, being held up on the line. Despite a
penalty count of around 20 to 1 against, and having two players
(no names) yellow-carded for persistent minor offences, Wimborne
managed to put two more tries under the posts, courtesy of Charlie
which were converted by Harriet and Donna, taking the full time
score to 24-0.
In summary,
the coaches felt this was the best game the girls have played all
season (if you don't count the high number of penalties). Everyone
played extremely well, ran hard, passed quickly and accurately,
tackled fiercely and thought about what they were doing, making
it much easier for their team-mates.
Thanks to Chobham
for their hospitality and a really good game of Rugby played in
good spirit and good luck with the rest of your season (except when
we meet you in the 7's) and good luck with your fund-raising."
Regards, Paul.

Croydon U18 0 - 51 Ellingham & Wimborne U18
|
We arrived at
Croydon to find warm sunshine and a friendly welcome. But, by the
time we had crossed the road and walked to the pitch, the clouds
filled the sky and our coach, Steve, was left feeling that perhaps
shorts were not the best choice on such a chilly afternoon.
E&W had only
managed to bring 15 players and within the first 2 minutes of the
game, after helping Bryony Cleall score, we lost Harriet Waller
to an injured ankle. Bryony converted the try and the score was
7 - 0. The outlook looked gloomy, as some of our players were playing
in unaccustomed positions and we were down to 14 players. Despite
this, the team pulled together and went on to score some excellent
tries.
Following a
penalty, the second try was by Donna Rose, who touched down in the
corner to bring the score to 12 - 0. After a series of rucks and
mauls, Jazz Clarke made one of her trademark runs with Lucy Struthers
in close support, to score under the posts, 17 - 0. A few minutes
later, Charlotte Benson collected the ball from broken play and
scored with Bryony converting, 24 - 0. One of the last plays of
the half saw Bryony taking the ball from the scrum and passing out
to Jazz, who scored under the posts. This was converted by Bryony,
31 - 0.
The second half
began equally well, with Bryony making a solo run from Wimborne's
22, to score in the right hand corner, 36 - 0. This was followed
by the forwards once more winning the ball and passing to Jazz,
who scored her hat trick, 41 - 0. Abby Guy, who had been blocking
and tackling the opposition all afternoon, then had to leave the
field, with her arm stuck in the classic teapot pose (winner of
the oddest injury). Down to 14 again, but that did not stop Harriet,
who ran in a try in the corner to bring the score to 46 - 0. After
some off the field exercises, Abby's arm finally freed itself and
she returned to finish the game, whilst Rowena Hunt left with a
strange blue bump growing above her elbow.
The game ended
with another fine series of winning the ball and passing, until
Jazz scored the last try of the game, 51 - 0.
Special mention
must be made of all the players, who were instrumental and vital
in helping preventing Croydon from scoring, winning the ball and
who passed the ball along the line to the scorers - Tash Scotson,
our acting captain and novice hooker, Lucy Struthers, Abby Guy,
Gracie New, Emma Lipsett, Miranda Paxton, Jess Weymouth, Ellis Collins,
Rowena Hunt and Amy Shipley. One of the trademarks of the game was
the close support you all gave each other, in tackling and winning
ball, as well as supporting the scoring runner. You all gave the
spectators a lively game to watch and never stopped attacking the
line - well done.
On April 5th,
we will be taking part in the first of the National Cup play-offs
in Reading, please read your emails for further details. Now for
a correction - our last but one league match is actually at Chobham
on April 19th, with the last game against Dorking to be rearranged
- if you remember, this was postponed on February 15th, due to regional
matches being played late because of the snow.
Good luck on
Sunday!

Esher U18 11 - 13 Ellingham & Wimborne U18
|
|
After
the match against Welwyn, any hopes of an 'easier' match were dashed
in the first few minutes. Our team captain, Hannah Walraven, gave
the team one of her many inspirational talks, encouraging them to
be confident and believe in each other and the game commenced.
For
most of the half, the teams played either side of the halfway line
with not much action in their 22s. There were good sniping runs from
both teams matched equally by good tackles. Esher took the first penalty
kick in windy and gusty conditions and missed. Several minutes later,
the referee played advantage for a high tackle and Wimborne broke
through into the Esher half. They were then awarded another penalty
which was scored by Bryony Cleall. Frustratingly, just as the half
came to a close, Esher were also awarded a penalty and equalised,
3 - 3.
In
the second half, the pattern of the game changed, with Wimborne rucking
and mauling their way to the line, only to have their first try judged
to be held up. This seemed to inspire the pack and several minutes
later in an attacking scrum just metres from the try line, Gracie
New passed to Bryony Cleall and then to Jazz Clarke in a sweeping
arc to score the try. The game resumed with Esher playing a kicking
game, finally leading to a penalty score and they edged closer, 6
- 8. With the game advantage going from one team to the other, Esher
finally broke through to score an unconverted try and took the lead,
11 - 8.
Hannah
gathered the team together for one more team talk which certainly
worked. Leading by example, Hannah and the team worked their way into
Esher's half. From a well contested ruck on Esher's line, Annabelle
White was seen to eye a gap and she seized the ball to dive over for
the last score, 11 - 13 to Wimborne.
A
tense 7 minutes followed where Esher were blocked at every turn until
one more of their positional kicks was caught and kicked into touch
on the final whistle. This was a close match and congratulations to
the Esher girls who gave us such a hard game.
Although
every player in the Ellingham & Wimborne side deserves a mention for
all their attacking and scrummaging effort, the coach's Player of
the Match goes to Ellis Collins, for persistent effort in attack.
See
you all next week in Croydon, for our last but one league match, kick
off at 2 pm.

Ellingham & Wimborne U18 12 - 10 Welwyn Saints
|
The score says
it all! This game was too close for comfort and one of the hardest
fought matches we have watched all season.
Within minutes of the start, we lost Tash Scotson due to bruised
ribs and this was just the beginning of a nail-biting encounter.
Waves of attack by Ellingham & Wimborne were followed by successive
attacks from Welwyn Saints. With little to separate the teams in
the first half, the honours went to Welwyn in the last minutes as
the Wimborne defence finally cracked and Welwyn sprinted in for
their first try. This remained unconverted and the half-time score
was 0 - 5.
Both teams took
a deserved breather during half-time. The match had been played
at full speed with only injury breaks giving the players some time
to catch their breath. Then, after a few minutes of the second half,
some broken play and missed catches in the Welwyn half led to the
ball being snatched up by Harriet Waller, who darted towards the
posts and scored. Finally we were level! The game went again from
one half into the other, with some superb tackles and defence on
the Wimborne line to stop Welwyn in their tracks. In the last quarter
of the game, Wimborne were scrapping for the Welwyn ball, when Bryony
Cleall caught a ricocheted ball and ran with it to score the second
try. She converted her own try and we were 12 - 5. Welwyn upped
their game and tried repeatedly to cross the line, but Wimborne's
defence was dogged until the final minutes when Welwyn scored their
second try.
The question came - would the team be able to hold on, or would
this be a repeat of last year, when Welwyn/Basford just beat us
to the National Final in the last few minutes. The answer this year
was 'No' and Wimborne held on for a victory that means they move
up the table in the U18 Girls Surrey League.
Our next fixture
will be against Esher on March 22nd, who are level with number of
games, but stood above us in points difference before today - another
game to watch!
Congratulations
to everyone in the team who played such a magnificent game, including
Donna Rose and Jazz Clarke who chased all the kicks and put Welwyn
Saints under pressure, as well as Annabelle White who won several
against the head. We all send our best wishes to Poppy Cleall, who
went to A & E with an injured ankle.

Ellingham & Wimborne U18 87 - Solent Sirens 0
|
The score belies
the untiring efforts and tackles made by the Solent Sirens, but
Ellingham & Wimborne were all working as a close knit team and playing
at their best. They proved unstoppable in attack and a series of
tries were scored by several players.
Try scorers
included Bryony Cleall, Poppy Cleall, Jazz Clarke, Donna Rose, Emma
Lipter and Gracie New, but the whole team, including all the subs,
contributed to a well-scrummaged and free passing game. (However,
the leap-frog move was certainly a first for the spectators - could
this move catch on?)
The photos tell
the story of a great team effort on a glorious day that saw the
U18 girls play their first match at Ellingham & Ringwood's new ground.
With more than 20 players in the squad and welcoming back players
from injury and others rejoining the team, Wimborne & Ellingham
look well placed to offer some good opposition and enjoy some good
games in 2009.
Winning this
league game, means that the girls have won all their matches and
stand 3rd in the Surrey league table with 2 games in hand over the
current leaders.
Our next league
match is on February 15th against Dorking and hopefully the snow
will all have disappeared and the game will be on.

Congratulations

|
Congratulations
to the girls who made regional this year, in alphabetical order:
Charlotte Benson Jasmine Clarke Bryony Cleall Poppy Cleall Abbie Guy
Victoria Horsfield Gracie New Donna Rose Rosie Tugwell Harriet Waller
Hannah Walraven
Congratulations
also to those who got to go to County and tried but didn't quite make
it, couldn't make enough time or suffered injuries: Alissa Grant-Walker
Alice Hoole Amy Leyland, Emma Lipsett Miranda Paxton Lucy Struthers
Jess Weymouth
And
no less mention to the girls who tried and didn't make County this
year or decided that school (and club) were more important; Ellis
Collins Vicky Dobbs Emily Hardwicke Rowena Hunt Tash Scotson Amy Shipley
Annabelle White
Personally
I think you are /all/ capable of playing at county level and any County
which doesn't give you a spot is missing out. If you're young enough,
there's always next season, and we think you should have made it (but
then we're biased).

Worthing U18s 7 - 37 Ellingham & Wimborne U18s
|
The girls break
Worthing's heart.
At Andover RFC on Sunday, E&W girls took on an unbeaten Worthing
in the London SE league, the day was sunny but with a chill in the
air and the ground was perfect for rugby.
From the start E&W put the pressure on the Worthing back line and
were rewarded when Bryony Cleall went over for her first of the
day.
The game was
looking at his stage if it was going to be a close affair with Worthing
winning ball from the rucks and testing the E&W defence. 5-0 E&W
responded and from a scrum 10 metres out Poppy Cleall playing at
No8 broke on the blind side and broke tackles to score 10-0
The game still was still tight and Rosie Tugwell broke through her
tacklers with some good footwork to set up Bryony Cleall to score.
Bryony then added the extras. 17-0
Worthing were
always looking dangerous and this proved the case when their try
machine broke through the middle of the E&W defence to score under
the posts. the try was duly converted. 17-7
Donna Rose was next on the score sheet for E&W where the ball was
shipped out to the backs and Donna went over in the corner 22-7
The try of the day went to Vicki Horsfield who scored on her home
ground for the first time this year. The try came from the forwards
workng well together and pushing over for the score. HT 27-7
The second half
was a much tighter affair and after 2 injuries to Worthing players
E&W lent 2 players for the game to carry on at 15 a side. A few
changes had to be made to the E&W line up which was soon rewarded
as Donna Rose forced herself over in the corner 32-7 With the light
fading fast E&W had one more trick up their sleeves, a cross field
kick to the corner from Poppy Cleall released Jaz Clarke to score
the final try of the day. FT 37-7
Good performances
were put in today from Ellis Collins, who played for both sides,
Emily Hardwicke, Amy Shipley, Tash Scotson. Elliingham and Wimborne's
coach Steve Benson commented " This was a good result for us today,
the girls played well but we still have some work to do"
Special thanks
must go to Andover RFC who hosted both the U15's and U18's today
and as usual the day went really well - Thanks Andover

North Dorset 10 - 35 Ellingham & Wimborne
|
|
After the disappointment of Beckenham cancelling the league fixture
due to lack of players, a match was quickly arranged to meet North Dorset
at Gillingham. Luckily we avoided the mass downpour on the Saturday,
but the weather was freezing and the wind was strong and icy in the
North Dorset hills. Each team had 12 players which led to more space
and a game of running rugby.
Within 5 minutes, Emma Lipter made a break up the
left-hand side of the pitch and scored the first try. Both teams then
battled for the ball until Jazz Clarke scored a run away try to bring
the score to 10 - 0. Jazz also scored the 3rd try just before half
time, with her conversion unfortunately disallowed (but on that matter,
we shall say no more.)
In the second half, E & W won some very good balls
in rucks and mauls and Poppy Cleall grabbed a try in the first few
minutes of the 2nd half. North Dorset's fighting spirit then paid
off, when they finally broke through and crossed the try line. This
seemed to galvanise E & W into another good set of attacking moves
with Gracie New making a break for the line and scoring after 15 minutes.
Another wave of attack followed, when suddenly Lucy Struthers did
one grubber kick, followed by another and another, until she dived
over the try line to score a try.
Since running to keep warm was essential, Poppy made
another run for the line to make the score 35 - 5. North Dorset persevered
with their attacks and took the final points of the game in the last
minutes and the game ended 35 - 10. Rowena Hunt was named Player of
the Match, but would just like to point out, that after the Mars eating
competition; she doesn't want to see a Mars bar again.
E & W would like to thank North Dorset for a very
good game, which despite some frozen fingers and wind resistance,
was a very entertaining game to watch. The fact that North Dorset
hotly contested and fought for the ball is evident in the fact that,
although I managed to photograph the E & W tries, it is sometimes
hard to spot the try scorer through the mass of blue shirts. In fact,
your challenge is to spot the ball in some of the photos. We look
forward to a rematch later in the season and hopefully some snow to
give the photos a festive look.

Letchworth 0 - 59 Ellingham & Wimborne
|
|
On Sunday Ellingham and Wimborne U18 travelled to Hertfordshire for
our annual game with Letchworth, the sun and 20C was the order of the
day as the girls set about their work against the Legends. The girls
are beginning to play as a team and after the very short time they have
been together the performances are beginning to shine. We will leave
Letchworth blog to describe the girls' performance:
'A Touch of Class ..... Well, more than just a touch,
actually...!
Letchworth U18s teamed with Stevenage for the first
time today to play Wimborne & Ellingham on their first visit to the
Legends Lane ground. With the home team barely yet on first name terms
with each other, the visitors quickly got into their stride and put
on a sparkling performance which saw them pull out a 39 point lead
by half-time. To their great credit, Letchworth & Stevenage vigorously
contested every ball right to the end but it was an excellent all-round
performance by Wimborne & Ellingham who ran out deserved winners 0-59.'
Try scorers: Donna Rose 4, Bryony Cleall 4, Charlotte
Benson 2, and Alissa Grant-Walker 1
Con: Harriett Waller 1, Charlotte Benson 1
Well played everyone on Sunday

Ellingham & Wimborne 34 - 0 H3 & South Sussex
|
|
E & W have begun their first season together with a good display of
rugby despite the appalling weather. It was a far cry from the mild
sunny day, when they went to Havant RFU, to do a practice session with
the Solent Sirens.
Havant was the first time that the full team had played
together in match conditions and the coach had a field day, putting
the girls into many unfamiliar positions to give everyone a chance
to experience the different roles. It was difficult on the day to
separate the new girls coming up from the U15 Ellingham and the Wimborne
girls as they fitted together seamlessly and played some excellent
running rugby. More impressive was the tackling and their determination
not to let the opposition score a try.
What a contrast on Sunday! We drove to our furthest
game in the east, Hellingly RFU, through torrential rain and mega
puddles. Even walking from the car park to the clubhouse was an exercise
in keeping dry. H3 & South Sussex, (for those who do not know this
stands for Heathfield, Hellingly and Hastings), could only field 12
players and in the interests of the game, E & W lent them 3 players.
The first half was played in the driving rain, with
a good run by Harriet Waller ending in a try on the left-hand side.
Five minutes later and after a mazy run by Jazz, the team created
an overlap and Rosie Tugwell scored with the conversion by Bryony
Cleall. The game developed into a series of driving rucks and mauls
with Donna Rose picking up the ball to score a break away try under
the posts, which was duly converted by Bryony. Just before half-time,
Jess Weymouth won the ball from the determined defenders to score
under the posts and the first half ended 22 - 0.
In the second half, the weather relented and the rain
almost stopped. Conversely, the game slowed up as well, with several
penalties being given against E & W. Ten minutes into the second half,
Harriet made another darting run down the left-hand side of the pitch,
followed closely in support by Jazz. Harriet dived over to score and
Bryony made an excellent kick to convert. The final score came from
Donna winning the ball from a ruck and the game ended at 34 - 0.
Congratulations must go to all the E & W players,
who played committed rugby but still had fun on the day including
mud sliding. E & W would like to thank H3 & SS for a good game and
playing with dogged determination on a very muddy and wet day. Mention
must be made of the E & W players, who although playing for the opposition,
gave their best efforts as shown by Ellis who was voted Player of
the Match.
Next week, we face Letchworth and will be hoping for
some better weather and that everyone has dried out, including the
camera.
