Wimborne had this match sown-up by half time having built up an unassailable 31 - 0 lead. Tries from Steve King, Jim Brokenshire, Denny Champ and two from Mark Griffith, plus three conversion kicks from James Mikolajewski had the large home crowd cheering and celebrating. However, all credit to Bradford on Avon as they ensured that any further points would have to be hard fought for and challenged Wimborne at every opportunity until the end. At the start of the second half, Griffith sprinted in to score his hat-trick of tries before Bradford on Avon knew what was happening; however, this spurred Bradford into action with a wide move that had the Bradford winger running in under the posts for a converted try. In a match that was played in the right spirit of the game with discipline issues few and far between, it was left to flair and ingenuity to shine through. Unfortunately for Bradford on Avon, this was a day Wimborne was full of themselves with both of these aspects of the game. Further second half tries from Jim Brokenshire, Henry Wareham, Jay van Wyk and Denny Champ, and a further four conversion kicks from James Mikolajewski, finished Wimborne's season in style. I will certainly be looking forward to reporting on Wimborne's matches next season as there seems to be something exciting emerging from this squad of players. Spectators quote of the week: "The game is won or lost far away from witnesses - in the gym, in your head and out on the training field - long before you play the game.'' With Corsham looking to do the double over Wimborne, the first
10 minutes of the first half was Wimborne's and the following 30
minutes was Corsham's. After absorbing the opening pressure, Wimborne
was first to score when Jim Brokenshire burst through the Corsham
line to muscle his way over the line to score. James Mikolajewski
stepped up to convert the kick. The rest of the half was Corsham
as they built a 7 - 19 lead by half time. Even with the enforced changes, Wimborne came out for the second half with a transformed attitude and were quickly on the scoreboard. Jay van Wyk fractured the defence with his bustling running style and scored under the posts - Mikolajewski converted. Brokenshire must have dug deep to find the strength to run half the pitch to score his second try as he was causing havoc with his unrelenting and penetrating runs. Constantly flanked by Mark Griffith, Brokenshire and Griffith were causing Corsham trouble every time the ball was swung out from the Wimborne forwards. The try that killed Corsham off was from Denny Champ the flanker-come-winger. Wareham was causing perplexity within the ranks of the Corsham defence with his little chips from the base of the scrum, having started the move that brought Brokenshire his second try, Wareham placed a similar kick from the base of a ruck that had Andy Unwin chasing and handing-off the defenders for Champ to be released to score his first try for the 1st team. Finally, Mikolajewski put the game beyond Corsham with a superbly placed penalty kick that took the final score to 29 -19. The last few minutes were played without Brokenshire who was replaced by Lewis Wilson who also was making his 1st team debut. Well, what words of wisdom can I say in my last match report before I return to the Havant News and reporting on the local side, who incidentally, have not performed as well as Wimborne this season. I would say that if Wimborne could show the belief in themselves they did in the second half of this match and couple this with an increase of fitness levels to reduce the injuries, they will be in a much higher league position than mid-table this time next year. Next week, the Newbury Dreamer will be guesting as the match reporter. Spectators quote of the week: "Anyone can give up; it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength.'' Wimborne never really got going in this match - considering their emphatic win against Oldfield two weeks ago. Apart from a Jamie Hawkings try and a James Mikolajewski conversion that drew the two team's level at half time, there was not a lot to inspire the travelling supporters. The highlight of this game was when an Oldfield drop-goal attempt fell short of the posts then bounced over the bar - the referee who had struggled with the new ELV's throughout the game went to blow to award the points! Luckily, the crowd had the wisdom to shout in unison a big "No" before the official could signal - common sense prevailing. Injuries to Chris Buller, Andy Unwin and Jamie Hawkings will cause some concern for Wimborne next week. However, next week will be my last report, I will be handing over to a new match reporter ready for next season. It has had its up's and down's but on the whole it has been fun. Next seasons reporter, will be revealed after the last game of the season. Spectators quote of the week: "NO'' Team:, Andy Unwin, Ben Hunt, Russell Tinsdale (Capt), Jamie Hawkings, Andy Hopkins, Denny Champ, Curtis Smith, Steve Davies, Henry Wareham, Paul Roberts, Chris Buller, Mark Griffith, Jim Brokenshire, Martin Chapman, James Mikolajewski, Jason Llewellyn, Mark Walter, Kevin Busby. Oh bugger, 15 - 3 up at halftime and then a pre-Christmas implosion! First half tries from Ben Hunt - following a tidy cross field kick from Jay van Wyk- a Chris Buller try that had Buller running from his own try line and van Wyk, scoring after some superb midfield interchange play, had Wimborne on the front foot. Although Devizes pulled back three-points from a penalty, Wimborne should have felt secure that the lead was not going to be eroded. The second half was a reversal of play as Devizes comeback at Wimborne and took a 15 - 17 lead. James Mikolajewski then kicked a penalty to edge Wimborne in front - much to the delight of the crowd. Wimborne should have then closed up shop. Unfortunately, missing regular players and match injuries to Jason Llewellyn, Tom Napier and Jim Brokenshire, was just too much and conceding a late try nailed the lid on the Wimborne coffin. Hey oh, the team have come a long way from the start of the season and it has been good to write the reports of a re-vitalised and winning side post Christmas. I feel that if Wimborne can perform well in their last three games of the season, this should be enough to set them up for a very successful season next year. Remember, "what goes round - comes round", revenge will be sweet next season. Spectators quote of the week: "I hated every minute of training, but I said, ''Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'' With one eye on the semi final the next day, Wimborne had a little
shuffle around to preserve some players for the Sunday game that
seemed to pass some home supporters by. It was Roberts who scored Wimborne's first try after cutting through the line and powering the ball over the line. James Mikolajewski playing fullback following an injury to Gavin Maltman, stepped up to convert the try. Sherborne then hit back with an unconverted try. Mikolajewski then doubled the Wimborne score with a try and conversion to take the score to 14 - 5 at half time. Just moments into the second half Sherborne had pulled back six points with two penalties in front of the Wimborne posts. However, Wimborne captain and Man-of-the-Match Russell Tinsdale crashed over for a Mikolajewski converted try. Wimborne then took the game beyond Sherborne when Tom Napier scored a magnificent unconverted try. Although Sherborne found some continuity near the end with a penalty and try, Wimborne coasted by the finishing posts by the skin of their teeth! Big game tomorrow and as I write this, it has come through that Devizes lost their first game of the season to the bottom club in their league. Were they resting players as well? Spectators quote of the week: Cannot be printed so this one will have to do - "He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life" Team:, Kevin Busby, Ben Hunt, Russell Tinsdale (Capt), Curtis Smith, Andy Hopkins, Denny Champ, Tom Napier, Steve Davies, Jay van Wyk, Martin Chapman, Paul Roberts, James Mikolajewski, Steve King Gavin Maltman, Andy Unwin Charlie Morgan, Jim Brokenshire. What a difference a week makes in World Rugby. On the back of a thumping last week, Wimborne tighten everything up, brought back a couple of players, contested at every breakdown and more importantly, moved the ball. Just minutes into the game Mark Walter was scoring in the corner to get Wimborne off to a flying start. This was quickly followed by Mark Griffith breaking the line after some slick handling and scoring his first of three during the match. James Mikolajewski converted. Chris Buller was next up with a break from midfield to carry the ball under the posts. Mikolajewski converted. Wimborne captain Russell Tinsdale then took a crash ball to continue adding to his personal points tally. Playing exciting rugby, Wimborne were looking impressive against a Oldfield side that just did not have any answers to the questions being asked of them. Jay van Wyk Wimborne's fly-half has settled well into the team since his elevation to the 1st team and van Wick's contribution to Griffith's next try showed how his confidence has grown. Breaking the line and committing two players, van Wyk charged towards the Oldfield line - popping out the ball at the last minute to Griffith to score under the posts. Again, Mikolajewski converted. Although Oldfield pulled a soft try back, Wimborne went in at half time 31 - 5 in front. The second half was even more emphatic than the first! Although trying to avoid getting a jug - Griffith was looking all around to pass the ball but his team mates just ignored him and let him score his hat trick of tries. Gavin Maltman was next on the scoreboard with a well worked try in the corner after combining with winger Mikolajewski. Having watch Tinsdale score on a crash ball, fellow prop Andy Unwin positioned himself out in the backs, flanked by Tinsdale and Jordan he ignore the support and jinked his way through to score under the posts with a little shimmy and side step that would have graced any top class fly-half! Mikolajewski converted. Chris Buller was enjoying himself on the wing and at every opportunity was cutting loose. A break from Tinsdale (who should have at least tried to sprint to the line from 50m out, instead of giving it to Buller) released Buller to score his second try of the day. Next up was van Wyk, using his strength and speed van Wyk cut through a lagging Oldfield defence to score another Mikolajewski converted try. It should be noted that Mark Griffith was getting all the attention (and jug) with his three tries and everyone ignored Buller's third. It should be noted that Buller kept his head down and should be punished next week for jug prevarication. Mikolajewski finished the match with a conversion to give Wimborne a 69 - 5 win. This was a good win that should set the boys' up for next weekend. It was good to see Sean Edwards back and lets hope he is back again soon. Next week Wimborne entertain Sherborne in a league match on Saturday and Devizes in the D&W Vase semi final on the Sunday. Spectators quote of the week: "Whenever I feel the need to exercise I go and lay down for half an hour until the feeling passes." It took Wimborne 20 minutes to breakdown a dogged Ivel defence with a swift move down the wing by Steve King who put through Gavin Maltman to score an unconverted try. This was closely followed by a Jim Brokenshire try after he chose his line well to cut through the Ivel defence and score a lung-busting try. Although playing with enthusiasm, Jay van Wyk was a little over enthusiastic with a dump tackle that saw him gain a yellow card and placed in the sin-bin for 10 minutes. However, just before the end of the half Ivel went over at the ruck and the resulting penalty kick by James Mikolajewski saw Wimborne ending the half 13 - 0 in front. After a quite chat at half time, Wimborne reverted back to the style of play we have become accustom to over the last few weeks. This rapidly converted into points with Mikolajewski cutting the line and scoring a superb try - Mikolajewski then converted his own try. It then became the turn of the forwards as Russell Tinsdale scored his first of two tries of the day. Mikolajewski converted. Having drunk from the fountain of youth, Tinsdale then collected his second try after a series of forward phases that left Ivel a little battled and bruised. Again, the try was converted by Mikolajewski. In the last throws of the game, Ivel scored their only points of the day with a well worked try in the corner. This score was met with some disappointment by the Wimborne players' who promptly returned the complement with a Jay van Wyk try. Final score 39 - 5 (?) It should be noted that Rugby First are showing a Wimborne win of 35 - 5, I am not sure how they have managed to get the score wrong but the Rugby First site might change once they receive the match card. Jamie Hawkings was awarded the well deserved Man-of-the-Match award after a very powerful performance. Wimborne are at away to North Dorset next week. Spirits are certainly high at Wimborne at the moment following three good wins on the bounce that has put a smile on everyone's face. Having gone to Wootton earlier in the season and lost by 60 points this game was a big turnaround that looks as if it was very pleasing for the aging crowd. Wimborne started where they left off at Frome last week, attacking from the start and forcing the opposition into making mistakes. Within minutes of the start Chris Buller was slotting his first points of the day after Wootton lost their footing at the ruck - giving Wimborne a three-point penalty score. Although Wootton hit back with a penalty a few minutes later, it was Buller chasing down a Jim Brokenshire chip that restored Wimborne's lead with a converted try in the corner. However, Wootton cashed in on Wimborne's indiscipline again with a penalty kick to pull back a another three points. Wimborne's forwards were working hard and a scrum on the Wootton 5-metre line proved their mettle when they put a hard shove on to get the opposition moving backwards, the ball spun out and hit countryside for Buller to score a well worked try. Buller then converted. Leading 17 - 6 going into the second half, Wimborne were controlling the game and playing like they were a top of the table side rather then a mid-table side. Jim Brokenshire then scored the best try of the game 15 minutes into the half. I cannot be sure but I believe that everyone of the Wimborne players were involved as the ball was switched from forward play to backs. A series of intelligent handling and interplay released Brokenshire into the corner to score (without a jig, dance or hop-skip & jump!). Wimborne then shut-up shop and kept Wootton playing in midfield. Man-of-the-Match Russell Tinsdale was quoted after the match as saying 'This was a fantastic team effort and was made possible by all the hard work the team is putting into training. There is unquestionably a real buzz amongst the players at the moment which I hope continues for the rest of the season.' Wimborne are at home next week against Ivel Barbarians. Spectators quote of the week: "Most people achieved their greatest success one step beyond what looked like their greatest failure." Not wishing to speak too soon but there seems to have been an eureka moment sometime over the last few weeks. With most of the faces looking the same - the style of play has changed beyond recognition. Visiting high flying Frome would have been a troubled fixture for Wimborne some weeks ago but from the start - Wimborne just brushed their opponents aside to play their best rugby so far this season. Wimborne's first try came after seven minutes from Steve King but it was the momentum from the start that was so encouraging to the travelling supporters. This was only the second time this season that I have seen fear in the eyes of Wimborne's opponents and that look never left their faces until the final whistle was blown. Frome did hit back when they took the three-points after a Wimborne offence but were soon down to 14 men after a late tackle on Gavin Maltman. Maltman then dusted himself down to follow up a surging run by Steve Davies to score an unconverted try. This was quickly followed by a Mark Griffith try - Griffith started the move with a kick into space, the forwards quickly moved into position to go through two phases of play before it came back out to Griffith who was then driven over the line with the support of Leigh Coulling. Unfortunately, just before the halftime whistle, Coulling was sin-bin for a trip - this resulted in some concentrated pressure by Frome. However, what looked like a scoring position, Frome fumbled the ball to Chris Buller who ran the length of the pitch to score a converted try. At the end of the half Wimborne were comfortably in the lead 22 - 3 and looking a very tight unit. The second half started with Frome suddenly looking hungry for the ball and converting pressure into points with a converted try. However, Wimborne rode-out this short-lived impetus and started to return the pressure. After pinning Frome down on their 22m line, a kick for touch was charged down by Jay van Wyk who collected the ball before the ball hit the ground and scored under the posts. Buller converted for the extra points with the help of the uprights. Wimborne then shut-up shop and although Frome scored a late try Wimborne were never going to let this victory slip. After last weeks report, it got back to me that Jim Brokenshire was upset that his footwork was described as a jig - well this week I can only describe it as a hop-skip and jump! Midway through the second half young Jimbo had an attack of cramp that gave the crowd some amusement as it looked like he had been attached to electros before hitting the ground. Happily, Brokenshire survived but was replaced with James Mikolajewski. Another worry was Jamie Hawkings who suffered a neck and back injury but all seemed well with him after the game. Special thanks to Martin Chapman for being the official team photographer before he entered the fray and as always, Dave Beck and Simon for their match day support. Spectators quote of the week: "It doesn't matter who scores the points, it's who can get the ball to the scorer." A quoted dedicated to the Wimborne forwards. Team: Andy Unwin, Ben Hunt, Russell Tinsdale (Capt), Jamie Hawkings, Andy Hopkins, Denny Champ, Leigh Coulling, Steve Davies, Jason Llewellyn, Chris Buller, Jay Van Wyk, Mark Griffith, Jim Brokenshire, Steve King, Gavin Maltman, Mark Hopkins, James Mikolajewski, Martin Chapman. This was a must-win game for Wimborne to keep their hopes alive for some silverware at the end of the season. What turned out to be a fair-weather day all round - Wimborne set about their tasks in a professional manner and never looked troubled throughout the game. Within minutes of the start new-boy Chris Buller was shimmering down the wing, outpacing two defenders to score Wimborne's first try of the day. This was after quick ball from the base of the ruck and swift hands through the backs. Chris then converted his own try. Chris was then on kicking duties again to convert Jim Brokenshire's try after Brokenshire danced through the Cooper Avon defence to score under the posts (more of a jig than a dance!). Combining throughout the game, Brokenshire and Buller setup the next Wimborne try for fullback Gavin Maltman. Again, quick movement across the park and a sharp angled run by Brokenshire released Buller, drawing the defender, Maltman was on hand to cross the line. Buller kicked to gain the extra points and take Wimborne into a 21 - 10 lead. Maltman then took the play across to the other side of the park to combine with Steve King this time, who scored under the posts with Buller successfully converting the try again. The injury time period played at the end of the half suddenly became very eventful! First, Russell Tinsdale crosses the line with Buller converting and then Jason Llewellyn was sin-bin for a team offence, Steve King had his nose broken whilst involved at a ruck and Cooper Avon scored an unconverted try. All this action in the last minute of the half took Wimborne in at halftime 38 - 15 ahead. Within two minutes of the restart - Steve Davies chased down a kick and to put it kindly, 'snotted' the fullback for Jay van Wyk to collect the ball and score an unconverted try. This was followed with van Wyk and Maltman harnessing their South African connection that resulted in Maltman scoring. James Mikolajewski on for King converted the try to celebrate his birthday in style. Jim Brokenshire then hit the angle again from a nicely weighted ball from Mark Griffith to score his second try of the day. Although Cooper Avon pulled a try back, tries from Tom Napier and Gavin Maltman finished the day off successfully for Wimborne. The game finished a good ten-minutes early after too many altercations from a well defeated Cooper Avon. Although much of this report highlights the part the backs played in this victory, it should be noted that without the effort and determination of the Wimborne forwards this victory would have been a lot closer. With Mark Hopkins making his first team debut as hooker along with fellow front row debutant Ben Hunt, both gave praise to props Andy Unwin and Russell Tinsdale for their supporting roles. Jamie Hawkings, Andy Hopkins, Tom Napier and veteran Leigh Coulling were immense in the pack but man of the match for this reporter was Steve Davies. Davies hit every tackle and held the line when the Wimborne defence was threatened. I will look forward to the semi final round - this was most entertaining. Spectators quote of the week: "I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end." Team: Andy Unwin, Mark Hopkins, Russell Tinsdale (Capt), Jamie Hawkings, Andy Hopkins, Tom Napier, Leigh Coulling, Steve Davies, Jason Llewellyn, Chris Buller, Jay Van Wyk, Mark Griffith, Jim Brokenshire, Steve King, Gavin Maltman, Ben Hunt, James Mikolajewski, Denny Champ. Top of the table Oakmeadians must have felt good visiting Wimborne, probably thinking about having a quiet weekend and an easy victory - how wrong that thought would have been. A new emerging force is growing at Wimborne with a back line that contains speed and agility, and a forward pack full of determination. After only 5 minutes Wimborne were in front with a well worked try from the base of the ruck with Gavin Marchant stretching over the Oak's line for the first blood and with Henry Wareham's successful conversion a long awaited smile appeared on the players faces. Oak's hit back with a successful penalty after some loose Wimborne play at the ruck but this was cancelled out for a similar offence at the other end when Henry Wareham collected the 3 points on offer. Just before the end of the half, Oaks scored an unconverted try to pull back the score to 10 - 8 at half time. With the wind behind them, Oak's were making the best of the kicking game and kept Wimborne on the back foot whenever possible. A 3 v 1 overlap was just too much to defend against as Oak's pressured the Wimborne line. An unconverted try saw Oak's take the lead for the first time. Wimborne then lost Jason Llewellyn with a shoulder injury that meant Jay van Wyk stepping out of the centres and into the scrum half position. On came Mark Griffith, who immediately straightened the running line and gave Oak's another problem to think about. A successful penalty and a late converted try from Oak's gave them a rather flattering victory. However, credit to both sides for a thoroughly entertaining match that will give both sets of coaches' plenty to think about. Well done to Jay van Wyk, Liam Saxby and Chris Buller on their 1st team home debuts - very exciting prospects. After the Christmas break was extended by bad weather, this was the first game of the New Year and the signs were there that the team was coming together. Once the cobwebs were cleared Wimborne were already 12 points down but dominating the forward play. Unfortunately, a silly mistake let Tadley slip through for a simple try. However, Wimborne were down to 14 players at the time when Tom Napier was in the sin-bin for 15 minutes after the official forgot to time the period and had to ask a player how long he thought it was! The second half went very much the same as other games where Wimborne stop the opposition scoring but only managed to put 7 points on the board with a Sean Murphy try and an Andy Hopkins conversion. Now, why this reporter alluded that it was starting to come together was the way the team played and more importantly, the shape and style that was developing. I am sure many of next weeks home supporters will agree that the developing players coming through are well on their way to establishing a good platform for the future. With injury and sickness hitting the Wimborne squad hard, it was
always going to be a while before Wimborne got into a pattern of
play. Turning around 22 points behind at half time was a fair account of the first half - with all the points coming from elementary mistakes. However, the second half saw Wimborne start to claw back the points through a Russell Tinsdale try that was converted by Paul Roberts, followed quickly with a penalty from Roberts and finally, Mark Walter showing a clean set of heals to score an unconverted try. Minety were certainly looking worried as Wimborne came back at them but unlike the Bradford game when Wimborne pulled back a 16 point deficit, 22 points was just a try and conversion too far. Overall it was a disappointing game but again I say that a little more attention to the basics would turn some of the first half of the season defeats into wins for the second half of the season. I have been asked to let you know that training will recommence
after the holiday break on Thursday, 8th January 2009. Here's wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a very successful New Year. Some continuity crept back into Wimborne this week as they clawed their way back from 16 - 0 down at half time to finally run out deserved winners. With the icy wind against them in the first half, Wimborne found themselves defending against long kicks and a determined Bradford side but did well to hold the score down to only 16 points by the end of the half. Wimborne employed the same tactics following the turn around and introduced some slick backs' moves to open up the game. Within minutes of the re-start Stevie King flew down the wing to score Wimborne's first try after Jim Brockenshire created the space inside - drawing two defenders before releasing King to score in the corner. The move was repeated minutes later, in the same circumstances, with the same support and with Stevie King scoring in the same corner. Bradford had their 'backs to the wall' as they fought against the wind and the Wimborne onslaught. Giving away a penalty was the best Bradford could hope for as Wimborne mixed it up front - looking for their third try. The strength of Leigh Coulling, Jamie Hawkins and Gavin Marchant was taking its toll on Bradford and after Paul Roberts kicked the penalty, a three point lead suddenly did not look very safe. The winning try came from a 5m lineout following a penalty - a good decision to go for touch rather than the easy three points - that saw Wimborne forwards' driving the maul towards the Bradford line. A quick move off the back had Sean Murphy and Aaron Day driving for the line - the try finally being given to Aaron Day who had had a good game. A special mention to Tom Napier for stepping up to do a superb job in the front row, Dennis and Andy for making the trip and Man-of-the-Match Dave Beck for enduring the ice, the cold and the wind on the far touchline - not to mention the words of wisdom in the changing room! Well done Wimborne, a good performance and a deserved win. Another implosion, 20 - 10 in front at half time following two tries from Gavin Maltman, a Tom Napier try and a penalty and conversion from Paul Roberts should have been enough to win this match. Unfortunately, Minety hit back with 24 unanswered points in the second half when Wimborne forgot to close-up shop. A little bit of soul searching may be needed over the next two weeks, a speedy recovery to the injured and a full attendance at training on Tuesday may just put everything back on track. Wimborne 1st XV's next match is on Saturday, 29th November when they will be away to Bradford on Avon. From the heights of last week's game to the lows of this injury
filled game. To follow in the trend of all the other games this season, another
debutant Liam Saxby was blooded in this match. However, how long
is it going to be before Wimborne run out of players' to bring in
to cover the injured? However, the fight was still there even when

On a sunny and delightful day in Wimborne, the Wimborne team illuminated and dazzled the gathering in readiness for the fireworks later in the week. The conditions were to say the least - poor. Handling was going to be a problem and with the ice-cold cross wind it was bound to catch a few players out on the high ball. Luckily, man-of-the-match Gavin Maltman dismissed the conditions to catch, handle and tackle everything thrown at him while bagging three tries to cap a fine team performance. What a difference a week makes, this Wimborne team fought and supported each other from the off and from where this reporter was standing, all I could see was Tadley bodies being flung out of the breakdowns at a alarming rate. Wimborne were first on the scoreboard within the first few minutes when Jason Llewellyn ducked under the advancing defence from the back of a scrum to score an unconverted try. It was thirty-minutes into the game before the next score was collected. It was Tadley who capitalised on what was an unforced error by Wimborne to run in a converted try. However, Wimborne response was swift with the first of Gavin Maltman's tries. A break through the centre of Tadley's defensive line saw Gavin pop out behind them and showing a clean set of heels - Gavin scored under the posts. The try was converted by Paul Roberts. Wimborne maintained the 12 - 7 advantage to half time. Wimborne started the second half as they finished the first and were on top of their game from the start. By advancing the score it meant that Tadley had to restart - a facet of their game they were struggling with that kept resulting in Wimborne having the put-in at the scrum because the ball had not travelled ten-metres. Martin Chapman was next on the scorecard with an unconverted try in the corner following a jinking run that culminated in Martin bursting pass the defence and stretching for the line. Gavin Maltman then combined with Steve King to muscle his way through to score his second try of the day following extensive Wimborne forward pressure. Tadley then put a sweeping move across the park together and pulled back seven points. This set the alarm bells ringing for Wimborne so roll out Fireman Sam in the guise of Charlie Morgan to score a well deserved try after fine match day performance. Paul Roberts stepped up to convert the kick. The finale was left to Gavin Maltman to collect his third try and get the jug in! Mentions in dispatches go to all the team after putting this performance in with the conditions as they were - but Kevin Busby stepping in at the last moment and Mark Walter making his debut must be singled out for stepping up to the mark. Congratulations to Wimborne for this performance, next week suddenly does not look so daunting. Next week Wimborne 1st XV are away to Wootton Bassett. Team: Russell Tinsdale (Capt), Sean Murphy, Kevin Busby, John Peart, Aaron Day, Steve Davies, Leigh Coulling, Charlie Morgan, Jason Llewellyn, Paul Roberts, Steve King, Adam Lennon, Ollie Hamer, Gavin Maltman, Richard Jordan, Mark Walter. The first half was an uphill struggle from the very start for Wimborne. First Rod Hutson went off within three minutes with a thigh injury and then James Mikolajewski suffered a hamstring injury that will see him out of action for at least three weeks. To compound this misfortune Wimborne were 25 - 0 down by the end of the half. However, after the restart, Wimborne dug deep into their reserves and started to fight their way back into the match. With flankers Leigh Couling and Tom Napier now playing in the centres and closing down the play in midfield - the action moved to the wings and around the fringes of the forward play. It must be noted that it was a little confusing at the rucks when after a recent RFU ELV (Experimental Law Variation) notification to all clubs and officials, bridging over the player on the floor was outlawed yet both teams were allowed to do so over and over again. However, it was Wimborne who had turned up in the second half and were very quickly on the scoreboard with a well worked try down the left wing with some fine interchanging play between Martin Chapman and Tom Napier. Chapman having received the ball from Napier proceeded to fix the defender before releasing a perfect inside pass to Tom Napier to score an unconverted try. To complete the injury tally for Wimborne, Leigh Coulling then suffered a foot injury that caused another reshuffle of the Wimborne pack. Riad Lynch who had been suffering from a stomach bug was moved to hooker, Sean Murphy was moved out to the backs and Sean Edwards come on as prop to make his first team debut - following in his dad's (Tony Edwards) footsteps. I am not sure how but with so many players out of position, Wimborne then went up another gear and were looking the more likely team to gain the next score - and this they duly delivered. Jason Llewellyn, who I believe was Wimborne's man of the match, dug out a ball from the base of a scrum to slip through the line of defenders and score under the posts. The try was converted by Paul Roberts. I would suggest to Wimborne that they practice restarts at training as they looked a little ragged whenever the opposition kicked at the restart. However, it was not long before the revitalised pack had taken the play back up field for Tom Napier to score his second try of the day. With the score at 25 - 17, Wimborne were certainly wining the second half. Unfortunately, right at the death Oakmeadians sealed the win with a last minute converted try. How would I describe this match - confusing? The interpretation of the laws needs further work, Wimborne need to start their matches as they finish them and BUPA should be contacted for sponsorship - they'd get their money back! Wimborne are at home next week hosting Tadley RFC. Team: Riad Lynch Sean Murphy, Russell Tinsdale (Capt), John Peart, Aaron Day, Steve Davies, , Leigh Coulling, Charlie Morgan, Jason Llewellyn, Paul Roberts, James Mikolajewski, Rod Hutson, Steve King, Gavin Maltman, Martin Chapman, Tom Napier, Andy Hopkins, Sean Edwards. What a turn around from last week. Wimborne turned
up for this game with steel and passion and nearly overcame a team
that had set out to grind them into the ground. Instead, Bristol found
a team matching them in all departments. The first 20 minutes saw
the teams cancel themselves out with neither side giving an inch.
A penalty put Bristol ahead but a Paul Roberts kick brought it back
to all square.
It was not until 30 minutes into the half that Bristol found a gap out wide to score an unconverted try. Paul Roberts then pulled Wimborne back with a penalty kick after Bristol were penalised at the ruck. Unfortunately, on the stroke of half time Bristol found space in midfield with men over to run in a converted try under the posts. The score at half time, 15 - 6, did not really reflect the balance of the game as both teams were locking horns on the halfway line for most of the match. Injuries were a worry for Wimborne during the break with Leigh Coulling and Sean Murphy both being replaced. The restart had Wimborne pressurising the Bristol line for a prolonged period that was finally turned into points when Bristol committed yet another offence at the breakdown allowing Paul Roberts to kick his third penalty of the day. Back within touching distance, Wimborne should have taken the points instead of kicking for the corner after yet another penalty was awarded against Bristol moments later. Failing to secure any points Wimborne found themselves on the back foot defending a long kick into touch. The resulting lineout gave possession to Bristol who drove for the Wimborne line. It was Wimborne this time that found themselves going over the top of the ruck to give Bristol three easy points. An injury to Mark Griffith had Adam Lennon replacing him at inside centre who very quickly created a Wimborne try. With Wimborne putting pressure on Bristol, Adam Lennon charge down a kick from the Bristol fullback - the resulting scramble had Paul Roberts kicking through to score under the posts. Paul then converted the try. With the score at 18 - 16 Bristol were going backwards but unfortunately following an injury to Riad Lynch the replacement hooker, the scrums went to uncontested and Wimborne were down to 14 players. With all the pressure on Bristol with Wimborne looking for the score that would see them through to the next round, Bristol scored two breakaway tries in the final two minutes to finish 32 - 16 winners. This was a good game to watch, full of fight and resilience by both sides. The injuries to the Wimborne players are a concern for next weekend's match but with the way the players responded in this match, I feel certain that our opponents will be in for a tough battle. Next week the Wimborne 1st XV are away to Oakmeadian's. Team: Russell Tinsdale (Capt), Sean Murphy, Andy Unwin, John Peart, Aaron Day, Steve Davies, Leigh Coulling, Charlie Morgan, Jason Llewellyn, Henry Wareham, Steve King, Mark Griffith, Paul Roberts, Gavin Maltman, Riad Lynch, Denny Champ, Adam Lennon. Oh dear, after a sterling performance last week, this week's performance left the Havant-garde Rustler having no one to try and rustle for Havant! The first 25 minutes of the game was all Wimborne - with Wimborne looking like they were going to cruise to victory. A James Mikolajewski try quickly followed by a Steve King try and a James Mikolajewski conversion gave Wimborne a comfortable 12 - 0 lead. However, after this Wimborne seemed to imploded. Corsham hit back with an unconverted try just before the end of the first half and then scored again in the first minute of the second half. Corsham then continued to play ten-man rugby for the rest of the game, picking and driving in the rucks and lineouts, and dominating the scrums. A late constellation for Wimborne was a Paul Roberts try. I think we will put a line through this match and put it down to a bad day at the office and move on. I know there is a lot more to the Wimborne team that has yet to shown itself and I think Bristol Harlequins on Saturday may get the backlash. Team: Riad Lynch Sean Murphy, Russell Tinsdale (Capt), Steve Davies, Andy Hopkins, Leigh Coulling, Tom Napier, Charlie Morgan, Henry Wareham, Paul Roberts, Mark Griffith, Adam Lennon, James Mikolajewski Steve King, Gavin Maltman, Martin Chapman, Jason Llewellyn, Andy Unwin. After weeks of dry weather both teams had to come to terms with the first rain of the season that made ball handling difficult and with a blustery cross wind, kicking would have to be accurate to gain any advantage. The first half saw James Mikolajewski slotting over two superbly taken penalty kicks after Frome were penalised for consistently handling in the ruck. The referee eventually decided that the ruck infringements by Frome were too frequent and sin-bin a Frome player for a team offence. Unfortunately, Wimborne were unable to take advantage of having an additional player. Nevertheless, Wimborne were certainly in the ascendancy and were unlucky not to score at the end of the half following a long period of forward pressure. Twice Wimborne were stopped inches from the Frome line and regretted the decision not to use the players on the blindside to capitalise on their length of pressure. Two unfortunate errors at the breakdown allowed Frome to matched Wimborne kick-for-kick and by the end of the first half the teams were all square at 6 - 6. The second half had Wimborne playing their best rugby of the season so far - the ball was being carried by the backs and the forwards were dominating at the breakdowns. This pressure created a further two opportunities for James Mikolajewski to kick penalties' - both kicks were taken with precision to put Wimborne 12 - 6 in front. Wimborne then introduced Denny Champ for his début 1st team game following an injury to John Peart with Rod Hutson coming on at full back when Gavin Maltman received a hand injury. It was just after this point in the match that Frome had a lucky break; a decision awarded the wrong way allowed Frome to run the ball through the hands to score a try out wide which was duly converted. Wimborne kept the pressure on Frome and looked the more likely team to score but a late mistake allowed Frome to gain another three points from a penalty to finish 16 - 12 winners. Even in the worsening conditions, Wimborne looked good value for money, playing some good rugby and pleasing their coaches. Head coach Dave Oliver said after the game 'that it was pleasing to see that the team were gelling together and with the introduction of the new players this season, the team certainly look on track for a bright future.' Next week the Wimborne 1st XV are away to Corsham. Team: Riad Lynch Sean Murphy (Capt), Andy Unwin, John Peart, Richard Jordan, Steve Davies, Tom Napier, Aaron Day, Henry Wareham, James Mikolajewski, Steve King, Mark Griffith, Adam Lennon, Martin Chapman, Gavin Maltman, Kevin Busby, Denny Champ, Rod Hutson.. Where Wimborne's win last week against North Dorset was a hard fought affair, this week's game against Ivel Barbarians was a more controlled result that saw Wimborne starting as they meant to go on, full of power and determination from the kick-off. Ivel had no answer to the forward domination of Wimborne's pack and were stopped in their tracks whenever they tried to move the ball quickly. The backbone of the this primarily youthful Wimborne side was the older heads of Russell Tinsdale, Lee Couling and Charlie Morgan who controlled the pace of the game allowing the younger legs in the team to grow in confidence and self belief. However, in the first few moments of the start, it was Ivel who pressured Wimborne into an early mistake in front of the Wimborne posts. Fortunately for Wimborne, it was sliced to the left of the posts allowing Wimborne to drive up the field and setup camp on the Ivel twenty-two metre line. Adam Lennon making his debut as inside centre collected the ball after some intelligent interchange play to break through the Ivel defensive line to score an unconverted try. By this stage of the game, Steve Davies and Richard Jordan were already controlling the rucks and mauls from the engine room of the Wimborne pack and with the support of Tom Napier and Lee Couling on the flanks, the forwards were dominating the breakdowns. In the twentieth minute Riad Lynch and fellow prop Andy Unwin stripped the ball from a charging Ivel forward and offloaded to full back Gavin Maltman. Drawing the Ivel full back, Gavin gave a delicate pass out to release Steve King to charge in under the posts to score - James Mikolajewski converted the kick to gain the extra two points. This season seems to be full of debutants for Wimborne - Henry Wareham making his first full senior appearance put in an outstanding performance at scrum half along with the welcome return of Rod Hutson, back at Wimborne following a spell at Swanage & Wareham. To cap Henry's first appearance he scored a superb individual try. Receiving a quick ball from Richard Jordan in the lineout and box-kicking into the Ivel twenty-twenty - he collected his own kick on the try line and scored. This gave Wimborne a 17 - 0 lead at half time. Ivel came out for the second half with a different attitude and were much more aggressive in the opening stages than Wimborne. This aggression was converted into points when Wimborne fumbled the ball in midfield to allow Ivel to kick through and scored an easily converted try. This spurred Wimborne to up the pace and in the twenty-ninth minute Martin Chapman and man-of-the-match Sean Murphy combined to setup Sean to score in his first game as captain to give Wimborne a 22 - 7 lead. Moments later, Sean Murphy was at the forefront again of a sweeping move across the park that culminated with his second try of the day that was duly converted by Henry Wareham. Final score Wimborne 29 - 7 Ivel Barbarians. Team: Riad Lynch Sean Murphy (Capt), Andy Unwin, Steve Davies, Richard Jordan, Lee Couling, Tom Napier, Charlie Morgan, Henry Wareham, James Mikolajewski, Steve King, Adam Lennon, Rod Hutson, Martin Chapman, Gavin Maltman, Russell Tinsdale, Aaron Day, Paul Roberts. This match was a bit of a rollercoaster ride for the Wimborne team - but in reverse. Instead of starting on a high, the Wimborne team found themselves travelling in a downward direction for the first 20 minutes after finding themselves 17 - 0 behind. However, the mixture of experience and youth click into place and it soon saw a reversal of fortunes as Wimborne dominated the remainder of the half. This domination fashioned a forwards try after some tough tackling and sheer determination - releasing Riad Lynch to score an unconverted try at the end of the half to leave North Dorset leading 17 - 5 at half time. It looked like there was some tough talking during the break by the Wimborne coaches Dave Oliver and Andy Dobson because Wimborne came out for the second half looking like a team that was not going to allow anything get in their way to stop them winning the match. The backs were moving the line forward and the forwards were taking no prisoners. Steve King scored his first of a brace of tries early in the first half capitalising on Wimborne's pressure of the North Dorset defensive line. The game then hit a bit of a lull as North Dorset started run out of ideas and concentrated on retaining the ball without any forward momentum. However, Wimborne had a game to win and started to increase the pressure that culminated in Tom Napier breaking through a crowd of players to score - this was duly converted by James Mikolajewski. With the scores level at 17 - 17 North Dorset staged a little revival and pinned Wimborne down in their own 22 for a short period but could only gain an advantage by kicking a penalty to take a 20 - 17 lead. Wimborne's restart had them driving up the centre of the pitch with a mixture of single-mindedness and persistence. After intense Wimborne forward pressure, Charlie Morgan broke away from the back of a ruck to score an unconverted try to take Wimborne in front for the first time. North Dorset then had a lucky break when Lee Couling was sin-bin when Wimborne were defending on their 5m line. Fortunately, North Dorset decided to take the scrum instead of the penalty kick against a seven man Wimborne pack. Wimborne never gave a inch and after absorbing the pressure, Wimborne cleared their lines. Unfortunately, the game was stopped with only 2˝ minutes remaining for an injury to a North Dorset player. Due to the nature of the injury the match had to be moved across the park to a free pitch to finish the match. Would Wimborne hold on? Not only did Wimborne hold on but increased their lead with a second Steve King try to secure the points for Wimborne 27 - 20. The team visibly grew in confidence during the match as the game went on. Man of the match Sean Murphy was a constant nuisance - not only winning ball against the head in the scrum but carrying the ball intelligently. Jason Llewellyn was getting the ball away quickly to Paul Roberts, who although he was carrying an injury was still managing to get the backs moving. Russ Tinsdale lead from the front supported by Aaron Day, Andy Unwin, Richard Jordan and John Peart in the forwards. Martin Chapman is back to his old self running at defences. However, Mark Griffith will be missed next week while away for a friend's wedding. A special mention to Gavin Maltman at full back who carried the ball at every opportunity whilst never flinching a defensive tackle. Finally, a big welcome to the 1st team squad for Henry Wareham who switched from the 2nd's at the last moment. Next week Wimborne 1st XV are away to Ivel Barbarians Team: Russ Tinsdale (Capt), Sean Murphy, Riad Lynch, John Peart, Aaron Day, Lee Couling, Tom Napier, Charlie Morgan, Jason Llewellyn, Paul Roberts, Steve King, Mark Griffith, James Mikolajewski, Martin Chapman, Gavin Maltman, Andy Unwin, Richard Jordan, Henry Wareham.
