Dorset County Cup FINAL
Bournemouth 33 - 0 Wimborne
Wimborne under 16's went to Swans full of confidence in our first ever cup final, after some good recent results. However it was not to be, with the bigger and stonger Bournemouth boys controlling the set piece it was difficult to get in to our full flow. We missed some crucial takles and let the hard running Bournemouth backs attack our line, they scored some good tries and capitalised on our mistakes.
These lads have come a long way this season and the best is yet to come. The boys never gave up and kept the fight going to the last, the boys should learn from this and get some good wins from now until the end of the season. All parents and coaches should be very proud of this bunch of boys. The Bournemouth players at this age are extremely good and deserved the win, however we will have Bouremouth in the colts next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With the last match between Wimborne and North Dorset played at the beginning of the season ending in a decisive win for North Dorset by 48-5, Wimborne took this game very seriously.
With tactics planed, the squad proving difficult to select with so many talented boys now, the Wimborne coaches were confident of victory. Wimborne started the stronger keeping play in the North Dorset half for the first 15 minutes of the game with probing kicks from Scott Ansell and hard defence with tackles coming from the excellent back row trio of Tom Coombes, Matt Burvill and Marcus Hook. However North Dorset look dangerous with ball in hand and the defence had their work cut out all day. The centres stayed strong this week with an improved performance from George Stagg and with Alex Curry stopping the hard running centres from North Dorset. The Wimborne line out, which did not function against Bournemouth the previous week, was back on track, and Wimborne were winning their own ball and a fair percentage of Norths and with a strong scrummage where the front row of Ryan Sturney Sean (Pig) Barker and Fergus (brother of Fraser) Wilford were outstanding.

However Wimborne could not turn the possession into points before half time. Second half saw changes, 5 in 5 minutes and a change in tactics, with the strong platform of the forwards, the half backs, Alex Allen and Scott Ansell let the replacement backs rip, David Thornett replacement centre for George Stagg was running some great lines the ball was sent wide at every opportunity and Wimborne scored. With an outstanding conversion from replacement Jack Carpenter bouncing off the posts to make it 0-7. Norths defence was strong and despite running at most opportunities Wimborne could not get over the line again but finished with a penalty from Jack Carpenter to make it 0-10 and an exiting prospect of Bournemouth in the final. It was a great Squad performance, with 21 of our 22 (Sorry Adam) boys playing an important part in this semi final. I hope all the boys realise it is a team effort and we could not have done this without the commitment of the whole of the squad of 27 players. No Man of the Match this week, all were winners!!!

Lexus Junior Rugby Festival
South West Region - Sunday 23rd September
2007

Wimborne 0 v 10 Exeter Chiefs
Our tournament began with a tough match against the Exeter Chiefs, (we were drawn against each other last year and we were well beaten). This time around we were better prepared, our forwards had "beefed up" and the backs were running some good lines. Not much difference between the two teams in the 1st half, Exeter scored a try out wide that was unconverted and we went into the break 5 nil down. We were forced to defend a lot in the second period only occasionally
getting out of our own half, but credit to the guys for sticking to the task and it was a "sucker blow" to have a try awarded against us after a clear knock on from a ruck 10mtrs from our line.

Wimborne 22 v 0 Saltash
Next up was Saltash, the team from Cornwall seemed to have a larger than life front row but our boys got low and drove them off the ball allowing the backs to pierce their defence and set up some good field positions. We scored three tries in the first half, Sam Warman, Fergus Wilford and Matt Brooks, all forwards finishing off some excellent plays from the backs and with one conversion added we finished the half 17 - 0 up. More of the same in the second half, into the wind we kept the ball in hand and used the width well with David Thornett crossing the line out wide to give us the 4 try bonus. A fine display of playing "heads up" rugby.

Wimborne 0 v 0 Bracknell
This was a tough encounter, Bracknell used the kick and chase to good effect in their previous match and we had to get in the face of their 10 to cut the supply off. Both sides competed well in the scrums and lineout and it was difficult for us to create any fluent play against such a strong defensive line. We lost our scrum half to the sin bin for 2 mins, that meant the other guys had to "dig in" for a while and the drawn result was a fair reflection of the match.

Semi-final
Wimborne 5 v 0 Reading
After a long wait and much deliberating by the tournament officials we qualified for the semi-finals as best runner up and the boys took to the field eager to put on a good performance. Reading had qualified as group leaders without loosing a match and looked a well-drilled outfit; we were going to have to be at our best! We dominated large parts of the game, strong in the tackle and quick to the breakdown all our guys combined well to keep the ball alive and create gaps in the Reading defence for our backs to exploit. Matt Brooks scored the only points of the match taking a quick tap penalty 10mtrs out and he was unstoppable as he bulldozed over the line. We survived a few nervy moments late in the game and resolute defending earnt us our place in the final.

Final
Wimborne 0 v 33 Exeter Chiefs
Late in the day and within 10 mins of finishing our epic semi-final we took to the field to face the Chiefs. Well the score tells it's own story really, one-way traffic I'm afraid, we never gave up and spent pretty much all of the match defending. Full credit to the guys for sticking to the task, the small errors we made were punished by the Chiefs and it wasn't long before they were out of sight. Good luck to the Chiefs who should certainly do well in the national finals.

Great achievement - Well done to all and a big thanks to the guys that didn't get on the field as much as some of the others, your efforts were instrumental in the teams success and deserving of the accolade of tournament runners up.

And finally..
Thanks to all the parents and coaches for your support on the day, without which the boys' achievements would not have been possible

Please find on the right, the squad selection for the Lexus Tournament:

If you have not been selected in the squad then you are more than welcome to come along and support the lads (bring your kit someone may have to drop out through injury or illness)

Arrive at Chipping Sodbury RFC for 9.15am, the club does not have extensive parking facilities but players can be dropped off there and parents will be directed to the car parks. At time off writing our pool matches are scheduled to be played on pitch 1, assemble there please.

Kit
Bring training/playing kit suitable for the weather conditions, your boots will be inspected by the referees before matches and it is your responsibility to ensure you have footware that conforms to IRB regulations. (I'm not sure on how the organising club view playing with blades so it would be a good idea to pack your metal studded boots as well). The wearing of mouthgaurds is mandatory.

Catering
The organising club will be providing facilities for you to purchase food & drinks although you may prefer to keep your costs down and bring your own picnic/packed lunch. You are strongly advised to bring plenty of fluids with you.

Travelling
It makes sense to team up with another player/family travelling to the tournament, please arrange between yourselves but if you have difficulty getting there or you can offer a lift to another player/parent then please let me know ASAP. (Phoning me the night before makes it very difficult to sort out).

Please see map below for the venue..
