We achieved great success on the pitch last year as League Champions and coming second in the National 15’s.
We have justifiably got a reputation for playing tough, fair rugby with a high level of sportsmanship and fun.
We love the game.

We are always looking for new girls to join us and share the fun and glory. So if you want to be part of something quite special, get fitter, have some great times, and hopefully win some medals along the way just call Emma.

Latest Headlines:

We have won the London & SE division one league.
We came second in the National 7s on Saturday at Leighton Buzzard.

also....

end-of-season do on Friday
minibus trip to Twickenham on Sunday to see the Barbarians
and we've entered teams in the Beach tag Rugby in July and August -

And finally.......
From the manager.
Thanks firstly to the girls. Without you there's no team. And what more could we say than a guest players quote "I wish I'd joined Wimborne Girls instead of the club I actually joined."

Thanks to the entire management team, in alphabetical order:
Peter Cleall - a fantastic job with the fixtures and who he doesn't know in girls rugby isn't worth knowing.
Gwyn Jones - or moneybags, the source of our girls new kit.
Lisa Hunt - Publicity Officer extraordinaire, who along with her other half Peter supplied coverage in the Echo, BBC Radio Solent and "probably" the best pictures on any rugby site anywhere in the UK.
Colin Loveridge - the man with a bag like the tardis. You need something, he's got it. What would we do without him and his chocolates.
Alan Rex - head coach. I don't know what would have happened without your willingness to step in. The results speak for themselves.

And to the parents, who have supported their girls during the season and provided transport when they could. This wouldn't be possible without you either.

It's goodbye to Becki, Emma, Louisa and Sam. Old enough to vote, too old to play for us. You'll be missed, but I hope we'll see you in the future.

And we have to say farewell to "Corporal" Carole who is leaving for pastures North.
Good luck Carole, and I hope you find a decent club up there. Look us up whenever you visit, you'll always be welcome."

Next season here we come.......

(oh, see you down the beach......)

National 7s runners-up and silver medal winners!

Wimborne U18s played their final games of the season at Leighton Buzzard, together with 30 other teams, who had all gathered to play the National 7s. On arrival, our first move was to pitch as close to the hedge at the top of the field, to avoid the whistling wind (please note that in our pics, it was not a bad hair day, just the wind!) Wimborne U18s don't normally think of themselves as 7s players, but the day was to prove otherwise.

Our first match was against Waterloo/Tydesdale, who unfortunately had only brought 7 players. The unfortunate part was that after 2 unconverted tries by Donna Rose, there were injuries to 2 of the Waterloo players, one bumped head and one dislocated knee (an old injury that reoccurred.) The match was abandoned after a few minutes, with the result of 10 - 0 to Wimborne.

Next in the pool came Exeter Saracens, who ran away with the game in the first half and only a late try by Donna, in the second half, put us onto the scoreboard, with the final score 19 - 5 to Saracens (the eventual winners of the competition.)

We took until the 3rd game to get into our stride and Wisbech Grammar School were our next opponents - research on the web said they were an up-and-coming team, with some ex-footie players. We expected a game of fast running and challenging tackles, but most of that came from the Wimborne side. Jess Weymouth and Donna scored in the first half with some excellent runs. In the second half, our defence held firm and after a breakaway run from Leah Thompson and slick passing to Donna, we scored again. With only a minute to go, Amy Shipley made another of her trademark runs to score under the posts, which was duly converted by Bryony Cleall. The final score was 24 - 0.

Everyone then waited for all the permutations to be calculated and our next games to be sorted out. We spent the time chatting to friends from other teams and exchanging friendly banter with Reading who were camped next to us. Guess who we faced in the quarter-finals? Yes, our old adversaries - Reading. We told them that it was our turn to win, as they had won our last encounter, and just like the last meeting, the game was incredibly close. In the first half, Reading led with the score, 10 - 0. In the second half, Vicky Horsfield scored and from a scrum near the line, Amy dotted the ball down under the posts. Both tries were converted by Donna and we had our narrow victory of 12 - 10.

For the second year in a row, we got to the semi-finals. Perhaps we can play 7s after all! Our opponents were Basford, in their bright yellow and red kit, an imposing sight. Most of the match was spent wrestling for the ball, with Wimborne proving they can scrummage with the best. The match ended as a 10 all draw, with tries from Leah and Bryony and we were back to the golden try, as at Dorking. This time, however, we scored first, with Leah Thompson making another flying run to score the Golden try.

We had gained a place on last year and hopes were high as we met Exeter Saracens again in the final. Alas, on the day, they were too quick for some tired legs and although Leah scored a try at the end , Saracens won 22 - 5.

This did not spoil the party however, as we proudly added another medal to our collection and everyone who played deserves praise.
The remaining players may not be on the try sheet, but contributed to every score and were amazing, both in scrums, lineouts and tackling in defence:
Rowena Hunt, Hannah Walraven, Tash Scotson, and last but definitely not least, our captain, Emma Jones, (who was sadly playing her last match, but what a way to end!)

Finally, a note from the parents and coaches to the girls - thank you for giving us a fantastic fun day out. My memories will be of players mingling with other teams, lots of laughter and some seriously good rugby. Looking forward to the end of season dinner on Friday 30th May at the Swan Inn.

Sunday May 11th
Dorking 7s - joint 3rd again!

Our thanks must go to Dorking for providing a superb venue and a great day of sevens. The weather was incredibly hot, the scenery idyllic and the competition hard fought against some new teams that we had not played before.

Wimborne were in the pink again, literally, as they sought to help out the refs who couldn't decide whether we were the black or the green team! All the players donned florescent pink leggings, with 'handmade' printed T-shirts and the results can be seen above!

First up were Chobham and after an initial try by the opposition, Wimborne fought back with tries by Jess (2), Amy Shipley (2), Sam Rex (1) and Donna Rose completing a great run by Lucy (1).
The final score was 27 - 10.

The interval between games was long and filled with water fights to keep cool. Our 2nd match was against Middle Weald and after tries from Emma Jones, Vicky and Jess, Wimborne led at half-time, 15 - 0. Middle Weald started a fight back and scored 2 tries and just as things were looking tight, Donna scored the winning try and the game finished 20 -10.

That completed our pool and we went through to the semi-final against Worthing, who were looking good. All the scoring happened in the second half, with a blindside break by Tash who passed the ball to Amy to score a try under the posts followed by an equaliser from Worthing. With the game finishing 5 all, the tension increased, as the game went into extra time, playing the golden try rule, first to score would win. It looked like deadlock until in the final minute of extra time, Worthing managed to escape our defence - once more we were destined for 3rd place on the day!

We got back to the serious business of waterfights and cooling down, when Middle Weald asked for some volunteers to help them in their semi-final against Dorking, as they had several injured players and could not make up the team. Several Wimborne players became honorary Wealdists and battled well for their adopted team, but Dorking were playing an excellent game of sevens and despite some superb runs and tackles, won the game.

This did mark the end of our tournament, but everyone had some good laughs and would all like to say a big thank you to our coaches, Paul Scotson, Gwyn Jones and Alan Rex for all their support, with special thanks to Colin, whose bag of tricks included some extra fizz this week.

Only 2 more rugby weeks to go, with our end of season dinner planned for the 30th May - details to be posted here so keep looking.

National 10s in Lichfield
Wimborne girls maintain their record for the 2nd year
Click here for photos from the Regional 10s, National 10s and National 15s.

Wimborne U18 girls travelled up to Lichfield as the Southern 10s champions and on their way to play Reading (Southern runners-up), Letchworth, Worcester, Darlington Mowden Park and Tynedale. Travelling up in separate cars, we were the first team to arrive, complete with wet weather gear. Hannah Walraven brought her friends to support us, but had injured her other ankle (not a rugby injury) and was unable to compete. Poppy Cleall also came, complete with fractured arm, which is healing well and we are glad to say that she will be back in the new season.

Our first game against Letchworth was a repeat of our first Southern divisional game and ended in a draw - we started slowly and Letchworth took the first points. Just before half-time, Bryony Cleall took the ball from the kick-off to run in the equaliser and the first half ended 5 - 5. In the second half, a run from Donna Rose was finished by Bryony to score another try. It all looked as if this would be our first win, but Letchworth fought back to run in a try in the last minute and our first match was a draw, 10 - 10.

We now knew that we had to win every match to beat last year's record of 3rd place and we faced Reading. Having only just beaten them twice, confidence was good, however Reading scored first, converting their try to lead 7 - 0 at half-time. Donna then snatched the ball from a lineout and ran in a try, which was converted by Bryony. The clock ticked on and another draw looked certain, but Reading snatched a try in the very last minute and we lost 7 - 12.

At this point, the team took stock and decided to come out with all guns blazing. We faced Darlington Mowden Park for the first time and took the lead in the first half, via Donna, with a conversion by Bryony, 7 - 0. In the second half, there followed the try of the tournament, with a superb try scored by Alice, Donna and Bryony interchanging the ball, until Donna finally touched down under the posts. Donna scored another breakaway try from a lineout and the game finished 21 - 0.

Then came Tynedale, another unknown opponent, but Wimborne were into full swing and finished 29 - 5. Special mention must be made of Sam Rex's scrambled try, a just reward for some excellent forward play, (despite suffering from a sickness bug) made after a superb run by Vicky and Amy Shipley's run down the try line to score.

Our final match was against Worcester, who had nilled every other team and who were looking forward to claiming their second cup (they are the current National 2008 cup winners). Worcester won the first half, 12 - 0. Worcester scored again early in the second half and it all looked over when Donna ran in a try and Bryony converted. One more score from Worcester meant that the match ended 24 -7, but we scored the only try against them on the day.

Because of the team's excellent efforts, with everyone contributing to the day, we ended up due to points' difference pipping Letchworth into 3rd place, and can take pride in still being 3rd in the country for the 2nd year. Donna's 9 try tally meant that she met Colin's challenge and he duly paid up (I hear that he has doubled the number of tries needed to claim the reward in the next game!) It was a good day out, with only a few minor knocks and bruises and everyone voted Lichfield as having the best slopes ever for rolldowns!

Next week, our regional players are back at Lichfield for the Regional finals and the rest of the team are going with high hopes to Dorking 7s on the 11th May.

Wimborne U18s - Divisional 10s winners 2008

Emma Jones, team captain, proudly holds the trophy

Wimborne travelled to Petersfield to play 5 other teams in the South Divisional 10s play-offs, where the top 2 teams would go on to the National 10s final in Lichfield in 2 weeks time.

The first game against Solent Sirens was a draw, 5 - 5. The second against Reading was close, with Wimborne winning 7 - 5. By the third game, the girls were finally warming up and getting the hang of playing 10s, winning their game against Worthing, 29 - 0.

Then came lunch, with the weather turning hotter and the pressure mounting onto the last two games. If we could beat the Exeter Saracens, we were through to the finals! The girls played fantastically and won 27 - 7. This left the last game against our league rivals, Welwyn, who had only narrowly beaten us to the National Finals, when playing as Welwyn/Basford.

The first half saw Wimborne take the lead 14 - 0, but Welwyn kept fighting and scored 2 unconverted tries in the second half, with the final score being 14 - 10 to Wimborne.

Congratulations must go to all the girls who helped in a tremendous team effort to win the South Divisional 10s for the second year running - a great achievement. Everyone played their part and the try scorers were numerous, including Bryony Cleall, Emily Hardwicke, Natasha Scotson, Rowena Hunt, Amy Shipley and Donna Rose.

The other team to come with us to Lichfield are Reading, as runners-up and we will be meeting Letchworth again as they are through with Worcester, representing the Midlands. It seems that as mentioned in the Letchworth blog, our 3 way training session at Reading last week worked wonders as all three of us are in the finals.

Wimborne Girls are Joint 3rd in the National 15s
Only 3 minutes and 4 points finally separated the Wimborne U18 girls from their second National Final in 2 years. This is a great achievement for the club and congratulations to all who played their part in reaching the play-offs.

Sunday, March 30th was a total contrast in weather to the previous weekend, sunny and perfect rugby weather. Wimborne were hosts to the 3 way play-off for the National Final, welcoming Solent Sirens and Welwyn/Basford combined side. Wimborne's first match was against the Solent Sirens and proved to be a very evenly contested contest. Solent Sirens struck first with a converted penalty in the first half, but Wimborne had the last word, with an excellent run for the line by Amy Shipley, converted by Bryony Cleall. The final score to Wimborne was 7 - 3.

Solent Sirens than played Welwyn, who narrowly won the game with a try to finish, 5 -0. This set up the 3rd game, between Wimborne and Welwyn, as the final decider. The teams battled it out with Wimborne scoring 2 penalties by Bryony Cleall to lead 6 - 5 at the end of the first half. This lead lasted until the last 3 minutes, when Welwyn slipped past the defence to score a last gasp try and win by 4 points to face Worcester in the National Final at Lichfield on April 13th.

Wimborne are now looking forward to playing the National 10s next week, where they hope to beat last year's record of 3rd place. On Sunday 13th April, Wimborne girls are travelling to Reading to play against Letchworth and Reading in triple friendly (report to follow.)

Saturday March 22nd 2008
Lichfield/Burton tour friendly

On a cold and very gusty day at Leigh Park, the visitors arrived with loud hailer and chicken in tow. In freezing conditions, the girls stood frozen in place, hampered by the frequent stoppages. The game itself was evenly balanced, with the girls nearly crossing the try line several times. This was reflected in the final score of 0 - 0. Wimborne girls would like to thank the visitors for coming to the game and hope you all enjoyed the after match chocolate fest.

Cup 1st round
Sunday February 24th
Wimborne 58 Oakbury 0

I'll start off by saying that I've never been to the Oaks ground before and it is the most picturesque ground I think I've ever visited. <end travelogue>
We were made very welcome and were greeted by the Oaks coach with the news that the 3rd team, Plymouth, had cancelled, so instead of the 3-way tie we'd expected, we had a straight winner-takes-all match vs Oakbury, a combination of Oakmedians, Salisbury and North Dorset. It turned out to be a battle between two halves of the Wilts and Dorset County squad, plus our Hampshire girls.
As we'd had two late player cancellations we started from the kick-off facing up with only 14 players against 15 plus about 5 reserves. We needn't have worried. What it did was to focus the girls and the advantage of playing with a team which has played together for around 3 years showed.
Every team member played their part with the game going to uncontested scrums fairly quickly and scores coming from (in alphabetical order) Amy, Bryony, Donna, Emily, Hannah, Poppy, Sam and Vicky and but for an unfortunate toe over the touchline, Lucy would have been on the scoreboard too.
I'd like to thank the Oaks people for their hospitality and wish them better luck next year (but not too much).
The only downer on the day was that the game was called early due a neck injury to one of the Oaks players who was taken off to PGH in an ambulance. The good news is that she has "only" damaged soft tissue and although she'll be out for the season, we can look forward to playing against her next season.
West Surrey District 12 - 68 Wimborne
The game was a little disappointing from the perspective that Surrey only managed to field 13 players, but after agreeing to play the match with 13-a-side, The match went ahead.
Surrey were overpowered in the scrum to the extent that the match went to uncontested scrums inside the first half. The scoreline was fairly representative of the game with Wimborne's points scored by a good cross-section of the team. Everyone without exception played well.
Tries scored by Poppy, Bryony, Sam, Donna and Amy. 4 Conversions and the first drop goal I've ever seen at a girls Rugby match.
Surrey played in determined fashion right to the end keeping pressure on Wimborne for the entire match and choosing to play out the entire match which was appreciated by the Wimborne girls after travelling 2 hours to get to Guildford.

News from the Wimborne girls playing Regional for South:

"The girls won at the weekend 87-0, Hannah Walraven, Bryony Cleall and Poppy Cleall x 2 all scored try’s with Bryony adding extras in the second half. Hannah was awarded man/lady/girl of the match. So all in all a good performance from the Wimborne girls."

Wimborne RFC U18 Girls Team go Live!
Wimborne Girls Rugby team are hitting the airwaves and becoming one of 'Julian's People' on the Julian Clegg's breakfast show, BBC Radio Solent.
The first interview will be live on Friday 1st of February and can be accessed online from the BBC Radio Solent website. They will be following the girls' progress throughout the remainder of the season every 5 - 6 weeks. Julian's program starts at 6:30am and finishes at 9:00 am, and for all you early risers, the girls should be on air at 6:40 am with hopefully, repeated extracts.
The opportunity to be on air is due in part, to their highly successful 06/07 season, when they made both the National 15s and 10s final and they hope to raise the profile of girls' rugby in Dorset and the Wimborne Rugby club.

Wimborne vs Dorking U18 Girls - South East League (Division One) Match
Wimborne christen their new kits with pride

On Sunday 27th January, Wimborne were playing a league match in their new green and black kit, for the first time. It was to be a fitting start for the new strip provided by our sponsors, 'Sport Relief' and the 'Community Foundation for Bournemouth, Dorset & Poole'.
On this bright sunny day, the third and fourth place teams faced each other for the first time this season. As the referee blew his whistle for the match to begin, Dorking swiftly struck the first blow and scored an unconverted try. The first 10 minutes saw Wimborne still in disbelief over the early score, but 20 minutes later, Poppy Cleall scored the equalising try from a driving maul, that was duly converted by Bryony Cleall. Some excellent forward play gave Wimborne their 2nd try by Donna Rose and the half time score was 12 - 5.

The second half of the match was a battle of the forwards, with Wimborne gaining the upper hand. Another forward try was scored by Hannah Walraven and a great match was finished in style by a storming run up the touch line by Donna Rose. The final score was 22 - 5 to Wimborne. Emma Jones, the team captain, congratulated her troops and said, "It was an excellent performance from everyone, and the award for the player of the match is to Chrissie Green." Thank you to Dorking for an enjoyable, if hard fought match.

At the end of the match, a photo was taken, showing the victorious team in their 'Sport Relief' and 'Community Foundation for Bournemouth, Dorset & Poole' sponsored kit.

WIMBORNE PLAYERS GO COUNTY (posted 18th November 2007)

Wimborne has representatives in both the Dorset & Wilts and the Hampshire county sides.
We would like to congratulate the following players for playing for their county and winning their first games.

For Hampshire, Poppy Cleall, Bryony Cleall and Hannah Walraven
Hampshire U18 girls travelled to Ealing, West London on Sunday 4th November to take their place in the Middlesex County Festival. Three Wimborne girls, Hannah Walraven, Poppy Cleall and Bryony Cleall were all in the starting line up where they played teams from Middlesex, Hertfordshire and the East Midlands in a round robin competition. All three girls performed well on the day as Hampshire walked away with the spoils, they convincingly beat each of the sides. In the first game against Hertfordshire, Poppy scored a hat trick of tries, with Bryony adding the extras. Poppy added 2 more tries to take her tally to 5 for the afternoon.

Next up for the Hampshire girls will be against Sussex at Petersfield on November 18th '

For Dorset & Wilts, Emma Jones, Becky Lewis, Natasha Scotson, Sam Rex, Ellis Collins and Annabelle White
They played their first match at Thornbury RFC on Sunday against Gloucester which Dorset and Wilts won 15-12 after trailing by 2 points at half time. Well done to all.

We will keep you posted on their progress.

Wimborne double up at the England U18 Talent Development Group

Following intensive trials throughout the summer, Poppy and Bryony Cleall have both been selected for the RFUW's U18 Talent Development Group. Both girls currently play for Wimborne, Hampshire and the South, the current National Regional Champions.

The Talent Development Programme represents the RFUW's commitment to the identification and development of talented young players and has selecting the top 30 girls from across the UK. It will run over the course of the year, focussing on core rugby skill development and game understanding, providing players with strength and conditioning education and development workshops, nutritional advice, sports psychology, performance lifestyle advice and an online training diary. The TDG will be a step up from regional rugby and will underpin the standard of England rugby for many years. The TDG will take place on days during half-term holidays.

Last year Bryony was in the U17 TDG squad and has been joined this year by her sister Poppy, both girls played in the successful Wimborne side that reached the finals of the National Cup, won London SE league, were the Southern England champions and came 3rd best in the country at 7's. They represented Hampshire who were unbeaten in all their games last year but the icing on the cake was to represent the South in the National Regional Festival at Rugby, the birthplace of the game. Bryony scored the winning try and conversion and to take the silverware in the last minute of the game to become National Regional Champions

Congratulations and 'Good luck' to former Wimborne RFC girls Hannah Brady and Alison Wright who have both made it through to the final trial for the England U20's 2007-08 squad.

Match Reports
November 11th 2007
WIMBORNE U18 GIRLS SCORE MAXIMUM POINTS AGAINST ESHER
Wimborne 44 - 0 Esher

On a fine, but blustery day, Wimborne U18 girls faced Esher in a rare home game and the second league game of the season. A large crowd of spectators were there to see the All Blacks play, including Dennis Fry, the club chairman, Victoria Buck, the RFUW representative (Club and Coach Officer for the South West) and Lorraine Dabner (Fund Manager for Sport Relief). They were not to be disappointed.

The first try came 5 minutes into the game from a well worked move from scrum to backs and scored by the winger, Amy Shipley. It took another hard fought 20 minutes before Poppy Cleall picked up a loose ball and straightened to dive under the posts for the second try. Bryony Cleall converted and the score was 12 - 0. After more ferocious rucking and driving by the forwards, Hannah Walraven scored a pushover try and Wimborne finished the half, 17 - 0.

The second half saw no let-up in the action, when from kick-off, a 5 metre scrum resulted in Amy Shipley's second try. Esher mounted some good counter attacks and got within metres of the Wimborne try line, but Wimborne's tackling was too good and they failed to score. Esher would not give up and were determined to make life hard for our forwards, but gradually, the Wimborne pack increasingly turned over the ball. They passed to the backs, who ducked and dived through the opposition, leading to more runaway tries by Donna Rose, Amy Shipley and Bryony Cleall, with the final score being 44-0.

Captain, Emma Jones, praised her players efforts, which puts them at the top of the London & South East League (Division 1), with special mention for Amy Shipley (winger), for her three tries, Louisa Scarff (fullback) for her blistering defence and running, Lucy Struthers for her best game yet and Donna Rose's excellent return to the team. Unfortunately, Louisa suffered a fractured collar bone halfway through the second half and had to leave the field - we wish her a speedy recovery.

Wimborne's next league match will be away against the Solent Sirens (Havant and Petersfield) on December 9th, all travelling support welcome.

September 23rd 2007
Wimborne 10 - 0 Letchworth

Wimborne’s 2007/8 season started with a tough friendly against Letchworth – with some very welcome support from Salisbury U18s.

Although four of our regular squad were unavailable we fielded 18 girls, including three who were making their rugby debuts, Hannah, Brooke and Chrissie. As Letchworth were under-strength we loaned them four of our squad and incorporated four Salisbury girls into our line up.

The first half started with both teams having to adapt to the team changes and it was Letchworth who seized the initiative and pinned Wimborne back into their own half for most of the first period with some strong, determined defending from Wimborne. Only in the closing minutes did Wimborne threaten to score but Letchworth’s solid defense ensured a 0-0 end to the half.

Wimborne came out with more conviction and better organization for the second half and our strong pack soon started to dominate. Letchworth’s defense was holding and their creative kicking and tough tackling prevented Wimborne scoring. But eventually our forwards found a way through and Becky scored the first try halfway through the half. Following some good attacking work by our backs on both wings, Anna broke through to score five minutes before time to complete the 10-0 victory. Letchworth rallied but were denied again only by some strong defending in our 5 meter zone.

Credit and thanks to both Letchworth and Salisbury girls for their contribution to a hard fought and fair game that everyone seemed to enjoy. And thanks to Leonie, Carol, Vicky and Amy for playing for the opposition with commitment and to good effect.

It was also good to see how quickly Chrissie and Brooke adapted to life in the second row in their first game, while Hannah got to grips with her role in the backs. Lots of promise for increased competition for places in the team.

Well done Girls !

Wimborne U17 Girls Season Round-Up 2006/07

What a season it has been for the girls! Back in September we knew at the start of the season that we would have this set of girls for 2 seasons due to the moving of the age groups next year. Having lost several experienced girls from the previous season they were being replaced by younger girls moving up from the lower age bracket, so we were looking at this year to be a development year. What developed was a season of extraordinary success.
In the full 15 a side game we won the South East league division 2 winning all our matches and not even conceding a point. All of our friendly matches were victories as well and to top this we got all the way to the National Cup final. In the final we were only beaten by a team that was drawn from 5 different clubs, so the girls can claim to be the best single club side in England this season. The statistical record was played 13, won 12, lost 1, points for 400, points against 25.
In the 10 a side game we didn't have any warm up games but went straight into the South and South East Championships, which we won, winning all our matches again without conceding a point. This took us to the National Finals where we finished third in the country. For the record the statistics were played 11, won 9, lost 2, points for 161, points against 24.
We took a very inexperienced team to the National Sevens not expecting to achieve much especially with some of more natural sevens players unavailable. To win our pool, and the quarter final and to lose the semi final by only one conversion was an outstanding effort. Again the statistics were played 5, won 4, lost 1, points for 114, points against 21.
This gives an overall record for the season of played 29, won 25, lost 4, points for 675, points against 70 which is an outstanding achievement.
From a coaching point of view the development of the players in terms of their skills has been great as well as seeing the teamwork and camaraderie grow through the season. One of the reasons for our success has been that when players have been switched positionally, or swapped with other players the team remains as strong. This has meant that in competitions we have been able to use the squad and not rely on 1 or 2 individuals as other teams seem to have done.
On a individual basis Bryony was selected for the TDG camps, which is for the top 30 players in the country. Ellis, Becky and Poppy were also selected to play for their regional squads and Hannah and both Amy's were selected to play county rugby this year. Our thanks go to Emma for her captaincy during the season and our best wishes go to Clare as she moves up to Ladies rugby next season.
Well done to all the girls for a fantastic season. You should be very proud of yourselves because your coaches and parents are very proud of you.

National 7's Finals

Leyton Buzzard was the venue for the National 7's this year and we took a young squad with some of our more experienced players injured or unavailable, the coaches agreed that this was to be a day to be enjoyed, without the pressure of winning and perhaps we would go for the Plate. A good day for rugby with it being cool but dry.
Our first match in our pool was against Tylderloo. As coaches we were not sure what to expect. What we didn't expect was Amy S running riot and scoring 4 tries in one game. The whole team played some fantastic rugby, drawing in the opposition before spinning the ball out wide where the gaps were - true classic sevens rugby. In total we scored 3 tries in each half for a victory of 30 v 0 against a team that was better than the score suggests.
The second match was against Paviors who had given us such a good game in the National 10's. In the first half they did to us what we had given out in the first match - they sucked in our defence and spun the ball out wide and by half time they had a 14 v 0 lead. One of Wimborne's positive characteristics is that they fight against the odds and they were not going to let this team through without a fight. Gaining control of the ball we drove deep into their 22 and some good handling saw us score in the corner. Although he conversion was missed the try gave us heart and Paviours something to worry about and we were soon spinning the ball about and driving deep into their territory. Some slick hands a good dummy and some great running lines and we were in for another try and only 2 points down. We couldn't pull off such a come back could we? Oh yes we could and for me it was the try of the day as all the team were involved in a sweeping move from one end of the field to another with all aspects of play, passing, running lines, ball retention in contact, ball out of contact and support play to die for.
Our final pool match was against Basford. Confidence was running high from the last match and despite playing back to back matches with no rest our use of our squad meant that the tries were a flowing again. Two score in the first half and three in the second were created and with three of them being converted a tired squad had won the game 31 v 0 and had come top of the pool.
The advantage of winning your pool was that you played a runner up from another pool. Our opponents were Tynedale who were a good sevens side whose tackling especially in the first half was great and we had only managed one score in the first half despite lots of pressure. Eventually though our pressure and great defence broke the spirit of the opposition and after a good second try, three more followed in quick succession. With three conversions we had another 31 v 0 victory and a place in the last four.
The opponents in the semis were Mowden Park from Darlington and they proved to be a very good side indeed. We tried to suck the defence in but their one on one tackling superb and we were unable to break through. Eventually the forwards gained some momentum and playing a bit 15 a side like drove the ball through the Mowden defence and were able to score in the corner. The conversion from a tight angle was close but just wide. The second half was a different story and Mowden kicked very well and was able to put us under lots of pressure. Our defence held out but they regained the ball and attacked out wide. Again the tackle went in and the linesman gave us a penalty for holding on. The ref ignored this and gave them a penalty instead. From the penalty they drove to the line and quick recycled ball they sneaked under the defence to score. The conversion was successful. The remainder of the game ebbed and flowed but without scoring opportunities and Mowden had a 7 v 5 victory that took them into the final. The other losing semi finalists were Paviors who we had beaten earlier so we can claim to be the 3rd best in the country at sevens this year. (I still reckon we would have won the plate). Again the girls can be immensely proud of their efforts and they showed great skill, fight and commitment on the day. This was the last game for Clare who is now moving up to ladies rugby. We would like to thank Clare for all her hard work, great skill and commitment to Wimborne girls rugby. She has been a great asset to the team over many years and we wish her every success in the ladies game in the future.

National 10's Finals

So it was less than a month later that we would return to Lichfield for another National final. Gone was the stifling heat and we arrived to drizzle on firm pitches. By the end of the day the pitches were a quagmire with up to 6 inches of standing water on them despite the pitches being on quite a steep slope.
This was a 6 team tournament (2 others had dropped out on the day) played on a league basis.
First up were a team called Paviors who hailed from Leicester. Early notice of what a good team they were was given when they drove our forwards off the ball and launched an attack and only some great defending held them out. Unfortunately this defending came at the price of a broken figure for Louisa. Slowly our forwards got control of the ball and started rolling forward. With the backs using the ball well and going for the gaps it was some great combination play that enabled our wings to skate around the cover defence and score. The try was converted and gave us the half time lead. The coaches felt that another score could have won the game the Paviors stepped up their defence in the second hald and we couldn't find a way through. Back came Paviors on the attack and by some good mauling play they were able to create the gap out wide to score. Crucially the conversion was missed. The rest of the second half was dominated by Paviors but Wimborne's defence is one of the best in the country and every tackle was made with great vigour and that was to be the end of the scoring and a hard fought 7 v 5 victory was ours.
Next up were Dorking who had qualified with us from earlier. They wanted revenge but our defence was at its meanest best and they never looked liked breaking through. Early on our forwards launched a great pick and drive sequence and rolling the maul broke the defence and we were through to score. We quickly regained possession from the restart and this time it was the backs time to sparkle with some great handling and running lines the defence was breached and we had scored again and added the conversion making the score 12 v 0 at half time. In the second half the rain got worse, my video camera got waterlogged and conditions became dreadful for playing any good rugby. Like the first match a couple of injuries made the game disjointed and it was a relief that the final whistle was blown with a 12 v 0 victory confirmed.
Our third match was against Letchworth who had also beaten Dorking in their previous match. Playing uphill and against the wind we kept the ball in the forwards and it was some great driving forward play against a dogged defence that gained us the territory so score the first try. Back came Letchworth in the time that remained but the defence held out (and held the ball up over the line) as the half time whistle sounded. Turning round we were able to use the wind and slope to our advantage and with territory gained the pressure was converted into 2 second half tries both of which were converted. This was a much tougher match than the 19 v 0 final score suggested.
Our penultimate match was against Welwyn who had given us such a fright on the way to the 15 a side final. Although we were able to produce some early pressure Welwyn used the slope and wind to their advantage and when we finally were forced to turn the ball over they found a gap out wide to score. Another slight mistake caused a turnover and they had slipped through for another score just before half time and we were facing a 12 v 0 deficit. After half time back came the girls with renewed determination and the second half we totally dominated. Twice we were given penalties by the ref when we were in the act of scoring so how they were not penalty tries I will never know. Despite this the Welwyn defence was tremendous and although we battered and battered their line we could not break through and the final whistle blew to end our hopes of victory in the tournament.
The final match was against Worcester who had beaten everybody else. We looked a good match for them but the truth was it was the conditions that won this game. Both sets of players tried hard but the ball was rarely in either 22 and the game became a mid-pitch mud bath. There was one slip that did prove costly for us and they were able to break though the midfield and score the one try and convert it for a 7 v 0 victory to seal the competition.
The girls played brilliantly on the day and should be very proud of themselves and especially Louisa who played on despite a broken finger. Third in the country at their first attempt at this format is no mean achievement and the future for next season looks very promising indeed.

29th April 2007
National 10's South and South East Area Championships

This was a 7 team championship played on a round robin basis with the top two teams qualifying for the National finals. The tournament was played at Petersfield on a nice sunny day but not with the heat we had suffered in the 15 a side cup final.
The first match was against Portsmouth and the girls could not have started any better. Within a minute possession was won and fast hands and good running lines soon saw the first score. With strong tackling leading to turnovers in our favour the forwards were soon charging at the opposition and creating holes in the Portsmouth defence and with one try being scored from a rolling maul and a second from great ruck ball releasing the backs we had a good lead by half time of 19 v 0 with the help of a couple of conversions. In the second half more good work from the whole team combining forward and back play created two more tries one of which was converted and due to some resolute tackling our line was never in serious threat of being breached. The final score was 36 v 0 to Wimborne and showed a great reaction to having lost the cup final in our previous match some two weeks earlier
Second match was against Cramberleigh and the girls hit the ground running. Gaining possession early we used a combination of powerful forward pick and drives and some incisive running from the backs to score an early try and from then on the defence just shut down anything that the opposition could throw at us. A second try was created by some excellent backs work before half time and with both tries converted Wimborne led 14 v 0 at the break. The matches were 8 minutes each way so a fast start to the second half would ensure victory and it duly came due to our forward dominance and powerful running from the whole pack to add 2 second half tries in quick succession, one of which was successfully converted. With strong tackling throughout the match our defence was never brached and we ran out comfortable 26 v 0 winners.
Our third game was against Reading, who form most of the Berkshire county team. The first half was a really tight affair with both sets of defence being on top. We created chances but some poor handling or poor decision making stopped the attacks before any damage could be done and half time was reached scoreless. In the second half the forwards quickly gained possession and some good driving play took the ball deep into the Reading 22 and a couple of rolled mauls and the try was scored. This seemed to relax the girls and good combination play between backs and forwards saw 2 more tries added with one conversion to complete a good 17 v 0 victory over a very good and determined Reading side.
Next up were Havant. We had played them earlier in the season and beaten them in the 15 a side game so they were out for revenge. This was a very physical game, with lots of hard tackling rucking and mauling. It was again to be Wimborne's forwards though who won the physical contest scoring 2 well taken tries as a result of some excellent pick and go moves and rolling mauls and we turned around at half time with a 10 v 0 lead. Having made a fast start in the second half we scored a lovely try in which forwards and backs combined before the ball was passed down the line to score in the corner. Again the defence was awesome and victory was ours by the 15 v 0 scoreline.
Our penultimate match was against Chippenham who had only brought 9 players to a tens tournament! The match being 9 a side became more like sevens and Chippenham had been playing this all day so they were quick out of the blocks and put us under a lot of early pressure and only some great last gasp tackling prevented them from scoring. Like the Reading game we were making mistakes and forcing passes in the first half and were glad to reach half time with no score. In the second half our greater fitness told and some great handling by the backs brought us two tries both of which were converted for a hard fought victory.
The final game was the championship decider against Dorking who were also unbeaten. It was the forwards who got control of the ball early and enabled us to put on early pressure and some more great handling by the backs saw us score in the corner. From the kick off great tackling kept our line intact and as we gained control of the ball the forwards ground down the opposing pack before releasing the backs to score in the opposite corner and give us a 10 v 0 half time lead. Into the second half and again we forced turnover ball and with the forwards driving through the Dorking defence we were able to score for the third time. The game then became a bit disrupted with injuries and it was the joyous sound of the final whistle that gave us a victory 15 v 0 and the Championship title with it.
Great congratulation go to the girls who had scored 123 points in 6 matches without conceding a point - a true squad effort.

National Cup Final - April 15th 2007

The national under 17 cup final was held at Lichfield Rugby Club on what was, and probably will be, the hottest day of the year. After over 3 hours on the coach to get there the problem for the day was keeping the girls cool rather than warming them up!
The team we were playing were called Leodias, a combination of 2 teams from the Leeds area, plus some other (TDG) players brought in from other clubs.
Leodis kicked off and soon Wimborne were under great pressure but resilient defence kept the scoreboard blank. Gradually Wimborne were able to exert some pressure of their own but the Leodias defence also stood firm. Half way through the first half the scores were still locked when Leodias forwards drove deep into right side of the Wimborne 22 and quick ball and a good loop move saw their fly half over for the first score in the opposite corner. Just a couple of minutes later and Leodias were execute another great backs move resulting in their crash ball center exploiting a gap to score. Did our heads drop? No way!! The forwards got some good ball and set off on some great picking and driving play. Phase after phase was created to get the ball to the line until off a driving and spinning maul Poppy broke free and over to score. We were now getting on top and the forwards driving forward again were denied by some good defence and half time coming at the wrong time!
The second half was a to and fro affair with first one team getting on top and then the other but the defences were superior to the attacking play. Leodias used the rush defence to great effect and our girls just tackled anything that moved. When we did attack from deep we could make the breaks but the cover defence was solid. Trying to play catch up is always hard but in temperatures that felt like we were in the Sahara desert it was doubly difficult. Five minutes from the end and Leodias got possession in our 22 and using a rolling maul against us got over the line to score the final try of the day. Despite putting on some late pressure the defence held and we could not get back at them and the cup was lost 5 v 15.
Fair play to Leodias, they were the better team on the day, but it was very close. A half break here or there and the score could have been so different.
Runners up in the national cup at the first attempt of trying is no mean achievement and the girls should be very proud of themselves. It took a team from 5 different clubs to beat them this season so they could easily claim to be the best single club side in the country in 2006/07. Well played girls and we look forward to next season with relish.

25th March 2007
National Cup Semi Finals

This was a 4 team competition with only the winner going through to the national cup final.
Played at Camberley the conditions were great for rugby.

Ivelbridge 0 - 7 Wimborne
First up for Wimborne was a match against Ivelbridge, a combined Ivel Barbarians and Bridgewater team. This was a real hard battle over 30 minutes. In the first half Emily had to go off with a bleeding nose but bravely came back later. Playing into the wind in the first half Wimborne attacked and attacked but could not get through a stubbon defence. Every time we built up the pressure a penalty was given to Ivelbridge to relieve it again. Half time was 0 v 0. Into the second half and the story was much the same, Wimborne on the attack but unable to break through. Back came Ivelbridge with a good attack but Wimborne's defence held firm. Into the final 5 minutes and we get the ball just inside our half and a great kick downfield by Bryony saw the ball stop just short of the tryline. Great chasing by the backs saw them drive the Ivelbridge player back over the line for a 5 meter scrum. First drive was repelled but the ball was recycled to Sam who drove across and down the field to the tryline but was held up but the ball was laid back and Hannah was there to drive over the line and score. The try was successfully converted by Bryony. Three minutes to go and it was Wimborne defence that was being tested but great tackling by backs and forwards kept the line intact until the joyous final whistle was blown and Wimborne had won 7 v 0.

Welwyn Garden City 5 - 7 Wimborne
Next up was Welwyn Garden City who had won their first match 17 v 0. Wimborne were first onto the attack with the backs making good ground but unable to get clear. Having gained the territory the pack set up to finish it off but great resilience was made by Welwyn. The pack the started their pick and drive moves and finally a chink was seen in the defence. Poppy with a great eye for a gap powered through but was held up just short of the line but inside center Bryony was in amoungst the forwards and was on hand to drive over the line to score. Despite a bit of a miskick the conversion into the wind sneaked inside the posts and just over the bar. Not Bryony's prettiest kick, but it would turn out to be the most important. Half time came without either side gaining any significant advantage and the turn around saw Wimborne leading 7 v 0. Although we had the advantage of the wind in the second half great pressure by Welwyn meant we were unable to take advantage with one kick being charged down and other set ups being pressured out. As time went on Welwyn's attack got more and more powerful and Wimborne were at full stretch to hold them out. A couple of injuries saw play go into injury time when Welwyn drove left then took play over to the right before bringing the ball back where eventually a gap was found for them to score under the posts. The conversion was held up while an injury was treated and unfortunately the pressure of the situation and being into the wind saw the conversion missed. No time to restart and Wimborne had won 7 v 5.

Letchworth 0 - 26 Wimborne
Final match was to be against Letchworth who had just beaten Ivelbridge 22 v 0 and had a chance of winning the competition if they could beat Wimborne. We had to win or draw because points difference would mean either Letchworth or Welwyn going through if we lost. With a steely determination Wimborne started showing great forward power and a series of pick and drives was taken up by Bryony who drove to the line but was held up. Hannah was once again in the right position and was able to dive over to score the first try, which was successfully converted by Bryony. Back came Letchworth on the attack but Wimborne's defence was good and when ball was turned over it was a driving run led by Bryony out of defence, taken up by the rest of the pack and finished off by Bryony to finish what she had started and then converted the try as well. Half time and Wimborne were 14 v 0 ahead. Letchworth would not lie down and were back on the attack until the backs started a move, the forwards drove the ball down field and slick handling by the backs put Amy S in space which she took to score in the corner despite the cover defence. Back came Letchworth again but the defence stood firm and when we got to attack again, Letchworth ware forced into conceding a penalty. A quick tap and Bryony was through the middle before anyone could react to score and convert her own try. Credit to Letchworth because back they came again and the rest of the game was spent with Wimborne defending but the girls would not be denied and at last the final, final whistle was blown and a place in the National Cup Final was ours against a team from Leeds.

Great credit must go to all the girls who played on the day and especially those who had to endure not playing as much as they wanted to. With great thanks to the parents and supporters we look forward to our day in the final on April 15th. The venue is yet to be decided but Twickenham sounds good to me!!

4th March 2007
Burgess Hill 0 v 39 Wimborne
The final league match of the season and we were greeted with a pitch that was best described as a mudbath and with a strong crosswind and driving rain thoughout the match both teams did well to play any rugby at all. It was only due to the distance that we had travelled that the match wasn't called off.
The early action saw Wimborne's defence on top of their opponents attack but we were unable to make much ground in the forwards. We soon had to release the backs and a searing move saw us charge into the 22 only to be denied by a great cover tackle into touch. From the resulting line out the ball was overthrown and the speed of reaction by Becky saw her take the ball and drive through the line out to score.
Five minutes later and we were back on the attack after a great penalty kick to touch. The first drive from the pack was repelled into touch but the resulting line out produced poor ball and the line out was stolen by Poppy who drove over to score. The try was successfully converted.
Standing on the touchline you had to keep moving or you sank in the mud so it was obviously not a day for running rugby. Nobody had told the girls though and soon we were on the attack with Hannah driving into Burgess Hills half and the ball was moved superbly down the line for Leonie to score in the corner. Just before half time the pack were again driving into the opponents 22 before the ball was shipped out for Amy S to skip around the outside of the cover defence and race in to score under the posts. The try was again successfully converted making it 0 v 24 at half time.
Into the second half and Burgess Hill were keeping the pack at bay until finally some good pick and drive moves by the whole pack drove a wedge in the defence and Poppy spotted the gap and powered over to score. Five minutes later and the pack were at it again, with the same result, Poppy spotting the gap in the tiring defence to charge over the line.
With Wimborne's defence holding up well against the Burgess Hill attack the next move saw Bryony charge through, hand off several would be tacklers, and score the final try of the day. The conversion was missed due to boots sticking in the mud, the ref said he was cold and wet through so he blew the final whistle with the score 0 v 39 to Wimborne.
The standard of rugby on the day was exceptional given the conditions and full credit must go to Burgess Hill and the ref for allowing the game to go ahead and for making it a great game despite the worst conditions I have ever seen rugby played in.
4th February 2007
Havant 5 v 32 Wimborne
Havant are sitting second in the league above us having lost only one game all season and have an England u19 prop in their pack so we knew this would be a hard fixture. Our pack more than held our own throughout the day and the front row of Sam Annabel and Christie deserve special praise for their scrummaging work. The game started with Havant having lots of ball but with their pack being held up by our forward they tried attacking with their back line but our backs put them under so much pressure they were losing ground. Eventually ball was turned over and a great move by our backs took us into an attacking position. Havant were penalised for killing the ball and a great touch kick gave us a line out 5 meters out. A great dummy throw to the back but actual throw to the front enabled Hannah to power over the line to score the first try. The backs soon had us back on the attack and at our scrum a rehearsed blind side attack should have seen Poppy scoring in the corner but the ref gave a foot in touch. Oh for a TMO because it never was in touch. The pressure on Havant and especially their backs was beginning to mount and shortly afterwards Bryony charged down an attempted clearance kick, swooped up the ball and ran in the try, which she also converted for good measure. After soaking up some more pressure we were back in Havant's half again when at their scrum, their scrum half had Tash all over her like a rash and the spilt ball was pounced upon by Poppy whose power and pace took her over the line to score and make the half time score 17 v 0 to Wimborne. The next try was a carbon copy of the previous one apart from us playing in the opposite direction! Tash again destroyed their scrum half and Poppy picked up the pieces before charging over the line to score. Having soaked up some Havant pressure we were soon back on the attack and after great driving play by the pack it was Bryony who managed to drive through their pack and she then had the speed and power to score. After more great defence we created a beautiful try with the backs using the ball until Louisa joined the line to create the overlap. Having passed the ball out to Amy S she looped around and as Amy cut back in to preserve space she gave the ball back to Louisa to score in the corner. We then conceded a couple of penalties, one of which was kicked at goal but missed. Then after a penalty was given against us when it should have been given for us (the ref later admitted his error) Havant swung the ball out wide for their winger to try and get in at the corner but a great cover tackle forced the ball to be grounded touch in goal. But the touch judge from the half way line and the ref gave the try (where was that TMO again!), so somewhat controversially we had conceded our first point of the season. The final whistle blew almost immediately. Four games in four weeks had been won with 152 points scored against good teams. The girls should be very proud of themselves because their coaches are.

Oakmedians 0 v 20 Wimborne

This was a really hard fought affair with Wimborne missing 4 players due to Regional Trials (Congratulations to them all as they all got in) and 2 players were late call offs due to sickness. After absorbing early pressure from Oakmedians it was the forward strength that enabled a drive upfield and after a good piece of mauling it was Hannah who broke away from the maul and by using her power and pace she beat the Oaks defence to score the opening try. The rest of the first half was attritional stuff with Wimborne holding off any Oaks attacks but being unable to mount any sustained pressure of their own apart from the last move of the half where a combination of backs and forwards wore down the defence but the ball was given as being held up in the in goal area as the half time whistle blew. The second half stared as the first finished with Wimborne on top. The try that followed was similar to the first with Wimborne's growing forward power gaining the upper hand before Hannah again burst through a maul and her pace took her in to score. With Oaks attacks being snuffed out by excellent tackling by the centers Rowena and Lucy it was again the forwards who created the next try with some quality rolling mauls and pick and drives before Annabel burst through the Oaks defence to score the try. The final try of the day was a beauty created by the backs speed of foot and speed of pass getting the ball along the line and Louisa, with her pace to burn, scorching around the defence to score in at the corner. After a short period of solid defence the final whistle was blown for another good victory.

Salisbury 0 v 59 Wimborne

As this was a friendly, Salisbury were playing 4 over age girls in their squad, so we needed to fire the girls up quickly and make sure these bigger girls didn't get on top and this we did. The pack got the ball and as last week used the pick and drive to great effect to drive hard and fast into the opposition 22. Then as the backs were released in was Bryony who spotted the gap and went for it to score the first try of the day, which she converted herself. Our next attack started inside our own half and with forwards and backs popping balls out of tackles the progress was relentless up the field until Bryony again saw the gap and broke through the defence to score. After some good defending the pack turned providers with another fierce drive mixing rucks and mauls to great effect and as the ball came down the line Louisa sprinted around the defence to score a lovely team try. The pressure on Salisbury was beginning to show and the power of Hannah in the maul saw her emerge from a Salisbury maul with the ball and she sprinted clear to score. The final try of the half was a repeat of the third with the packs power getting it to the 22 before the back line put Leonie clear to sprint away and score under the posts, with the try converted by Bryony. The half time whistle sounded soon after with the score 29 v 0 to Wimborne. With the words play like its nil v nil ringing in their ears it was the pack who started the second half on fire with driving mauls and a pick and go game taking the ball deep into Salisbury territory until captain Emma made the final powerful surge over the line to score her first try for the club. With Tash making the Salisbury scrum half life a nightmare the ball was spilt and Poppy scooped up the loose ball and used her power and pace to score the next try. After absorbing some pressure from Salisbury, great tackling by the centers caused turnover ball and with the backs quickly realigning and moving the ball down the line Leonie was put into the space to race over for her second try of the day. It is always dangerous to kick to a flying full back and this was very ably demonstrated by Louisa who fielded the kick before setting off on a mesmerising run to score in the corner. Being a day of doubles it was Hannah turn to score her second try of the day. Again it was good pressure by the backs in defence to create turnover ball and the forwards powered on and rounded off by Hannah to score. The final try of the day was a thing a beauty by the backs with lovely flowing passing and running putting Amy in at the corner with her pace to score. A great all round performance showing a mixture of power pace and skill.

Chobham 0 v 41 Wimborne
This was a rearranged league fixture against a previously unbeaten Chobham side. The girls were up for the fixture from the kick off (and no knock-ons) and began strongly with good work by the backs getting play into the Chobham 22 where the forwards took over with several pick and drives before Emily crashed over for the first score of the day and her first try for Wimborne which was duly converted by Bryony. The next try came from a fired up Wimborne pack. Hanging off a maul Christie charged up the wing with the pack in close support. Mixing offloads out of the tackle with pick and drives it was Poppy whose pace and strength took over the line with Bryony converting from wide out. Good defence from Chobham kept Wimborne quiet for 10 minutes but finally it was from a Chobham maul that Hannah ripped away possession and charged through the 22 to score in the corner. This was typical of the play during the day. Whoever took the ball into the maul it was nearly always Hannah or Annabel who came out with the ball. With half time approaching the Chobham defence was standing firm so Bryony fired a kick deep into their 22. From the resulting line out Poppy stole the ball and cantered over to score again converted by Bryony to make the half time score 0 v 26. The instructions were given at half time to give the backs more ball and it was the back line which cut through early in the second half and after a great cover tackle the ball was recycled down the back line where Poppy, the forward, was able to burst over the line. It was not long before the backs were again cutting through the defence but once again they were held up short of the line by some good defence but the forwards took over and drove over the line with Poppy touching down for her fourth try of the day. Having resisted some good Chobham pressure the girls were soon back on the attack and after a lovely flowing move involving forwards and backs it was our flying Swiss winger, Leonie, who powered her way in at the corner to score the final try of the day, her first for the club. At this point having passed the 40 point margin for the league the referee blew the final whistle. This result means Wimborne have won all 3 of their league matches by 40 points to nil per the league table.

National Cup
Wimborne 19 v 0 Hucclecote
Sunday 26 November saw Wimborne u17 girls make their debut in the National Cup. Playing in a pool of 3 with only the pool winners to go through the coaches urged the girls to make a fast start. Straight from the kick off a knock on meant us defending a scrum in our own 22. So much for the fast start!! Ten minutes of continual pressure followed with Hucclecote unable to break the line and Wimborne making errors and failing to clear the ball. Finally we got some decent possession and after good work by the backs and forwards we were eventually able to attack their 22. Good handling by the backs brought the ball out wide and when the tackles came in the ball was quickly recycled and shipped out again where Poppy was able to drive over the line and score the first try, converted by Bryony. Straight from the restart the ball was driven up by the forwards and quickly shipped along the line to give Claire some space which she sped into and around the cover defence to score under the posts. The conversion was good by Bryony. After another knock on from the restart, we regained possession and after a series of pick and drives by the pack to get into the 22 the ball was again skilfully used by the backs to put Rowena in for a try in the corner and to make the half time score 19 v 0. Playing into a stiff breeze in the second half it was Wimborne's defence that came to the fore, repelling all of Hucclecote's attacks with some great tackling, rucking and mauling from both backs and forwards. Every time Hucclecote thought they had a player in the clear another Wimborne defender would appear to make a bone crunching tackle. Having repelled everything thrown at them Wimborne ran down the clock to secure a great 19 v 0 victory over a very good side.

Wimborne 36 v 0 Taunton
Next up were Taunton with whom we have had some very close matches in the past. Playing with the wind and the confidence from the first game we were soon on the attack and after powerful runs from the forwards had punched a whole in the defence slick handling by the backs put Rowena in for her second try of the day, which Bryony successfully converted. Despite a knock on from the restart we were soon on the attack again. A great run from Hannah up the middle caused havoc in the defence and the backs sped into the 22. We were held up short of the line and prevented from recycling the ball illegally. Taking a tap penalty Annabel took a crash ball, put in a sidestep and dived over the line for the second try again successfully converted by Bryony. Again a knock on from the restart (this is not a tactic honest) gave them a scrum, but great pressure on their scrum half from Tash led to turnover ball and the pack doing some great picking and driving took play deep into the 22 where quick recycled ball and more slick hands from the backs put Rowena in for a try in the corner. Repelling Taunton's attacks with ease we were soon back driving into the opposition 22 and with their defence disorganised the backs moved the ball and linked with Poppy who skated around the cover defence to score her second try of the day, successfully converted by Bryony. Half time 26 v 0. Playing into the wind for the second half and going to uncontested scrums helped Taunton gain some ball and get to put some pressure on the Wimborne defence but all their attacks were well contained by some great tackling. Half way through the second half and the pack were driving again, and after some good work by backs and forwards interchanging it was Poppy who drove over the line to score her third try of the day. They say you should save the best for last and Wimborne did just that. Great midfield tackling saw the ball turned over and the backs were off and running. As the tackles came in players were cleared out to present quick ball. The forwards then took the ball on always presenting quick ball back until it was time to release the backs. Quick hands and quick feet saw the ball all the way along the line and Amy was on the wing to take the pass to score. It was All Blackesque and culminated in a great 36 v 0 victory over another good side, and progress into the latter stages of the National Cup. Everybody played really well on the day including two debutants Carol and Leonie and the coaches also wanted to give praise to Louisa and Emily for a lot of unsung work during the day.

Bryony makes the top 30 in England

Following the trials on 26th October at Guildford RFC, the London South, Hampshire and Wimborne centre Bryony Cleall has been selected in the RFUW's U17 Talent Development Group while in her first season of U17 rugby.

The TDG Programme represents the RFUW's commitment to the identification and development of talented young players and has selected 30 girls from across the UK.

Bryony will continue to represent Wimborne, Hampshire and the South regional side, only last weekend at inside centre she played for Hampshire U17’s in their 19-0 win over Sussex. Humble about her obvious talent, Bryony has what it takes to go all the way and this represents a superb opportunity for her to reach her potential, saying 'I didn't think I was good enough, the trials were hard and there were many talented rugby players including my twin sister'

Bryony started her playing career at 7 when she played mixed mini rugby with Ellingham and Ringwood and Salisbury before moving into girls rugby at 12. Bryony moved back to play for the successful u14 Ellingham and Ringwood side for 2 years and gain county honours for Hampshire U14’s.

Bryony has now made the move up to the U17 age group and plays for Wimborne U17 girls who have remained unbeaten this year.

Bryony has already been selected for Hampshire County side at U17 and through her being chosen for the U17 TDG she will automatically qualify to play regional rugby for the South. All this and she is still only 14!!!

Wimborne 56 - 0 Basingstoke

Sunday 15 October saw Wimborne u17 girls play their first competitive league match in the London & SE Girls league 2 at home against Basingstoke.
Because the Colts had Wimborne pitches the game was played at Ringwood and Ellingham. With 7 of the girls having come up from the u14 age group and 6 experienced girls having left the team from last season there were a lot of nerves on display before kick off. The home teams plans were further disrupted by Basingstoke only bringing 10 players, so we lent them 3 players for the game.
Wimborne used the nerves to fire themselves up and straight from the kick off great defensive tackling and good work from the pack turned the ball over. Some slick handling and Bryony was in at the corner for the first score within the first 5 minutes (5 v 0). This then set the pattern of play with the whole team tackling anything that moved, some great mauling work by the pack and slick hands by the backs. It was this combination of hard work by the pack and backs handling skills that Bryony in for her 2nd try in the right hand corner (10 v 0).
The third try quickly followed after good work by the pack from a line out drove the ball into the Basingstoke 22, the ball was spun down the line for Clare to use her speed to run around the cover defence and score under the posts. The try was converted by Bryony (17 v 0).
Soon Wimborne were back on the attack and after the backs were held up just short of the line Annabel picked up and dived under the defence to score (22 v 0). As half time approached the pack were soon driving towards the line and emerging from the maul was Hannah to score just before the break (27 v 0).

The second half started as the first had ended with Wimborne exerting great pressure on the Basingstoke defence and it was Hannah who found the gap to score the first try of the second half (32 v 0). Wimborne ran the ball back from the restart and after briefly being held up it was Hannah again bursting through the defence to score and complete her hat trick. The try was converted by Bryony (39 v 0).
Basingstoke tried hard to pressure the Wimborne defence but it held firm all afternoon. After some more good work by the pack the ball was released to Ellis who used her power and pace to charge through the defence to score try number 8 (44 v 0).
Straight from the restart the backs put the ball through their hands and out to Amy S on the wing who used her pace and a good hand off to score in the corner (49 v 0). The final try of the day summed up the team performance with great inter play between forwards and backs, offloading in the tackle and Bryony was put in to score her hat trick and then rounded it off by converting her own try (56 v 0).
With the 50 point barrier broken the referee blew up for full time.
Well done to all the girls who played and special thanks go to the 6 players who played a half for the opposition and played really well against their team mates with full commitment. They are a credit to the club and themselves. It is a rare day when the coaches can say that everything that they had asked the girls to do in training they did in the match but today was ones of days.

The next league match is at home to Sutton & Epsom on 19 November.
Come and support the girls as they try to stay top of the league or come and join in the fun at training on Saturday mornings at 10:00am.
