Wimborne 3rds were on the road with the first XV to North Dorset
where both teams lost last year. Sadly new skipper Dave Richards
was called into work at the last minute and could not make the game.
With a couple of last minute additions to the squad in the form
of Geoff and Chris Moxam it gave us a couple of strike runners (what
do we do with those)?
The first half was tough going with both sides trying to batter
each other up front. North Dorset kicking 2 penalties which showed
they were not confident in running the ball. Late on in the first
half saw stalwart Penri (wanna be back row) Jones get squashed by
a rather round Dorset prop which dislocated his left collar bone,
best wishes to Penri for a speedy recovery.
Half time North Dorset 6 Wimborne nil
The second half started much the same as the first and home side
scoring yet another penalty. Then the game changed, Wimborne gaining
control with quick ball from the forwards enabled us to use our
running game. Simon Cuff now at scrum half had a snipping run down
the blind side putting in Geoff Moxom for his first of two tries.
Forward dominance led by the versatile Mark Trent playing in the
back row pushed Dorset back on their own line, Dorset conceding
the penalty, a quick tap and long pass to Moxam from Cuff saw try
number two. The home side responded and putting pressure on the
Wimborne defence who conceded a penalty. The home side opted to
kick to the corner which ended in a push over try, a move they had
used all game (something we will have to work on defending for the
return game). The boys dug deep and put in a massive last effort
for the injured Jones and missing skipper Richards, moved the ball
straight back into the home sides 22, good hands from the backs
was finished off in the corner by the young Anthony Burton.
The final score North Dorset 14 Wimborne 15
Well done boys remaining unbeaten in the league, congratulations
to the firsts and seconds who both recorded wins in their respective
leagues.
A first clean sweep for many a day - long may it continue.
